Another example of why it's important to get your timing chain checked out, especially if you can hear a rattle on start up!

This BMW 1 series has been bought buy us as a non runner, the previous owner said it just cut out at a set of lights.

Even though it's only done just over 100k and it has extensive service history, backed up with very little build up inside the engine indicating good quality oil the camshaft timing chain has still snapped causing extensive damage to the top end valve system.

This will be repaired so the car can be used as a collect and deliver car to aid convenience for our customers!

Timing chain failure is possible on any car but especially on BMWs and Mercedes.

If you hear any kind of rattle, either on start up or while running then it's worth investing or even changing as preventative maintenance!

The worst effected models are BMW N47, N57 and Mercedes OM651 engines.

We recently had this Mercedes X-Class return to us to diagnose and repair a long standing issue.

After a couple of different garages attempting to diagnose the whistling/rattling sound coming from the engine it was brought to us.

Upon inspection of the EGR system it was noticed that the bearing for the EGR flap had collapsed and snapped the retaining pin, allowing exhaust gasses to force their way past causing the noise the customer had heard.

A genuine MB EGR cooler assembly was fitted along with all the relevant gaskets and the customer says it's not run this quietly for as long as he can remember!

Finally got round to doing some bits on our cars!

First up is retrofiting genuine LCI bi-xenon headlights to my E90, a very complicated swap as there is much more than just the headlights to change!

This retrofit requires the following parts to be carried out properly:
- Bi-Xenon headlights
- Xenon compatible FRM or 'Footwell Module'
- one of our custom made Xenon Retrofit wiring looms.
- Carry out coding of various modules to enable the Xenon headlights

We can also retrofit fully functional Adaptive Bi-Xenon headlights or AHL with cornering lights but this is even more involved and requires a couple of different custom wiring looms.

All Modifications have been carried out to BMW specifications using one of our custom made wiring looms and genuine BMW parts so when completed everything looks factory fitted

We can retrofit standard Bi-Xenons like these, or other retrofits such as logic7, CIC or even fully functional Adaptive Xenon headlights.

Big job on last week with this Sprinter. With 225,000 miles it's no surprise that the original timing chain was due replacement.

All parts fitted were Genuine Mercedes including:
- Genuine replacement chain
- Timing chain tensioner
- Chain guide rails
- All gaskets and relevant parts
- Fresh oil and filter.

While the engine was out the customer also opted go fit an LUK Duel mass flywheel and clutch kit along with some other broken parts found along the way.

The sprinter is now all ready for it's trip over the alps this week.

Bit of a photo dump this week as it's been an extremely busy couple of weeks here at DE Motor Works and I've not had time to keep the socials up to date.

This F31 was back in for a timing chain replacement after an initial inspection the week before.

Amongst other jobs that I didn't have time to document we also had a Mercedes Vito in for a steering rack replacement, an X Class in to investigate and remedy issues with the ADAS system and replace a boost pipe and an E250 in for an A Service.

This F31 was booked in yesterday to investigate major play in a rear wheel bearing that had been noticed when new tyres were fitted.

Upon inspection it was found that the main nut that holds the rear wheel hub and driveshaft in place had been left loose causing the bearing to begin to come apart and causing the differential output shaft seal to become damaged and leak.

An inspection of the rest of the vehicle was also carried out and it's booked in to have the other faults rectified next week.

Yesterday we had this stunning individual Frozen-Grey G21 M340d in for a follow up appointment after diagnosis earlier in the week.

The EML was on caused by a faulty Diesel Particulate sensor, a very common issue with the B57 engine.

A genuine sensor was sourced from BMW Chesterfield and fitted same day ready for the customer to go away next week.

This E90 was in with us last week to have its timing chain replaced.

This is a very good example of why we only use genuine BMW parts! A non genuine chain kit had previously been fitted less than 10k miles ago and the guide had broken up, it’s very luck that no further damage was done as this kind of failure can lead to the engine being out of time or even oil pressure issues.

A new genuine chain kit was fitted along with fixing some other common N47 issues and it’s back on the road good for another 100k.

A nicely spec’d R58 Mini Cooper SD in today to have its Active Spoiler coded out to allow the owner to fit a JCW Fixed rear wing instead of the factory one.

All coded to BMWs original retrofit specifications using genuine BMW ISTA-P software, no error codes showing and ready for the mechanical side of the conversion.
