At Side Rock Cycles we specialize in building minimalist custom motorcycles. Cafe Racers, Scramblers, Trackers, Brats whatever you want! Side Rock Cycles is headed up in Bournemouth by Pete Hodson. Most of Pete’s working life has been in the bike trade including working for the local Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Triumph main dealers and for Sammy Miller. His lifelong riding passion began when he first slung his leg over his 1973 Garelli Rekord. Since then his eclectic list of bikes owned and tinkered is immense. Highlights include Suzuki T500s, Suzuki X7s, Yamaha RD 250/400s and LC 350s. Then along came CBX1000, Dresda T500, an ape bared and tasseled Tiger 110! and more recently several Mille and Tuono Aprillias as well as various BMW GS models. Pete started racing in 1977 and raced until 1985. He won a few club championships and had podium finishes in the Formula 1 Nationals aboard his factory sponsored Rickman Yoshimura GS1000. Although no longer racing he is never happier than when riding fast and can often be found at track days around the UK. Cadwell and Oulton Park being his current two favorite tracks. Pete will be delighted to hear from you to discuss ideas for next build.

Guzzi V50

We're changing the look slightly on this V50 with quite a few of the stock silver coloured parts now going black. Once the powdercoated swinging arm had been installed so could the shaft, diff, disc and new fully adjustable YSS shocks. Then the rear wheel complete with new bearings and fresh Bridgestone BT46 tyre .
It's looking good .

Guzzi V50

Just got the seat back from our master upholsterer Glenn Moger and as usual he's done a fab job. Thankfully the metal seat base was in really good shape before it was blasted and powder coated prior to Glenn working his magic. We wanted to keep the original shape and pattern of the original but put a modern twist on it.
The old degraded foam has gone in favour of the latest spec material and cut to exactly the same dimensions then covered in black leather sides with a reversed black leather top which gives a suede look. The original pattern on the top was created with light blue stitching to match the bikes' colour and finished off with the initials of the owners dad who previously owned the bike , sadly no longer with us . A lovely idea as the bike will kept in the family , ridden and cherished in his memory.

Guzzi V50

We're a big fan of YSS shocks as they're great quality, fully adjustable ( if you buy the top spec models ) and are priced well . More importantly they perform and can transform the ride quality of the bike . These are going on our Guzzi resto , replacing the tired old originals. Top spec with adjustments for spring preload, rebound damping and ride height ( length ) . We love a bit of bling

Guzzi V50 recommission/resto

With most of the parts back from the powdercoaters including the wheels , we got our pals at JT Tyres to pop round and fit the new Bridgestone BT46's and fresh tubes .
We're making some subtle changes to the bike including going black with wheels ( instead of silver ) and other parts too which we think will enhance the aesthetics and give it a fresh look . Nothing is going to be chopped or radically changed , just enhanced .

With the little stainless rack made and fitted , our BMW R65/860 U.S Army inspired project is done . Now some shakedown runs, adjustments etc before the owner comes to collect. That exhaust sure sounds good !

Things are progressing well with the Guzzi V50 re commission/resto with most of the parts stripped off that are going to be either powder coated or painted . All the bodywork is being repainted in the correct factory colours but there's going to be some subtle changes of colour to other parts of the bike just to freshen it up and make it a little different . Watch this space !

Decided that my old retro one piece leathers needed some ventilation after getting seriously sweaty at Mallory Park's 1000 bike festival doing the track sessions on my trusty BM cafe racer.
Sourced the leather hole punches, marked out the grid and spacing and set to it . It was either gonna be a mess or actually look ok and hopefully work . Think it worked out well !

R65/860 street scrambler.

With the new high level exhaust system all buttoned up it was time to fit the freshly painted mudguards . Finished in U.S.Army military matt green and the tank adorned with the iconic white star ( with a worn look ) , it's certainly going to be different and exactly what our client wanted.

Had a great day exhibiting two of our BMW Airhead builds at the Kickback Magazine + Custom Show courtesy of Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum . A really good turnout and was great to catch up with previous customers , talking to other builders and having a cuppa with mates who rode in on their bikes . Glorious weather too.

R65/860

With the 860cc Siebenrock power kit on and the top end all buttoned up it was time to turn to the exhaust . Our client supplied the basic 2 into 1 stainless high level system but it needed modifying and a silencer made . Cue our local pals at Armours who did the mods and made a stainless custom reverse cone silencer along with a neat perforated heatshield . It's gonna sound fab .
