🚨 “YOU CAN’T FAIL A CAR JUST BECAUSE IT’S RUN OUT OF SCREENWASH!”

The wipers work.
The washer motor makes a noise.
But the reservoir is empty and nothing reaches the windscreen.

When checked, the washers cannot supply the fluid needed to clear the glass.

The owner says:
“There’s nothing actually broken. It just needs topping up.”

That may be a very cheap fix.

But does a cheap fix change the MOT requirement?

A — Pass. Hearing the pump is enough.
B — Minor defect because the motor still operates.
C — Major defect because the washers cannot clear the screen.
D — Advisory only because screenwash is a consumable.

Before the comments turn into “our garage would just fill it up” — helping with a quick top-up is a separate part of the conversation.

It’s available and safe.
They’re happy to stay there quietly.
They’re not asking to wander underneath the car or interrupt the tester.

Reception says:
“We don’t allow customers to watch. Company policy.”

The customer replies:
“I’m only asking to stand behind the glass.”

A — The garage can ban all viewing as a company policy.
B — Watching is only permitted if the customer works in the trade.

The load blocks access needed for a proper MOT, including the passenger-seat belt checks.

This is spotted BEFORE the test starts.

The tester asks for the obstructing items to be moved.

The owner says:
“Just check what you can. I haven’t got time to unload it.”

He can’t make the necessary access available during the appointment.

“HOW ON EARTH DID THE TESTER MISS THAT?”

A car passes its MOT.

Then the owner spots a tyre with barely any tread and starts warming up a complaint.

Fair enough. Nobody wants an unsafe tyre.

But here’s the detail that changes the question…

It’s the SPARE, stored securely in the boot.

It was not fitted to the car during the test.
The four fitted tyres meet the requirements.
There are no other fail defects.

A — Yes. Every tyre carried in the car is part of the test.
B — No. A stored spare is not a fitted road tyre under test.
C — Yes, unless it is a space-saver.
D — It can only pass if the spare is removed from the boot.

Would you have checked where the tyre was before declaring the garage useless?

Or were you already halfway through:
“My cousin’s a mechanic and he says…” 😂

There’s a second question too: if you get a puncture tomorrow, would you actually want to fit that spare?

PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF.

The passenger airbag has been deliberately switched off using the manufacturer’s control.

The separate SRS malfunction light behaves normally.
No airbag system fault is indicated.
There are no other fail defects.

The owner’s mate says:
“An airbag light is an airbag light. Get it plugged in.”

He’s diagnosed it from the passenger seat before his seat belt’s even clicked. Efficient. 😂

A separate check of its service history establishes that the cambelt replacement interval is overdue.

The garage recommends getting it booked in.

The owner looks at the new MOT:
“I thought that meant it was good for another year?”

Their mate goes one further:
“If the belt needs changing, they should have failed it.”

For this scenario, the car has no defect meeting an MOT failure criterion. There is no abnormal running or obvious engine distress.

He removes every tool, every fitting and the mysterious bucket that’s been in there since 2019.

The van now weighs well under 3,000kg.

“So that makes it a Class 4, doesn’t it? It’s lighter than half the SUVs outside.”

It’s a conventional goods van. No camper conversion, minibus or special classification involved.

You book the family car in early. Sensible. Organised. Practically a new person.

Then it fails. 😬

One MAJOR defect.
No DANGEROUS defects recorded.

You check the old certificate:
“Hang on. That’s still got three weeks left!”

Your mate says the failure cancels it.
Someone in the waiting room says you can drive until the old one expires.
Someone else has an uncle who “used to do MOTs”.

Lovely. Three legal departments and nobody’s finished their coffee. 😂
