I was out at 7:30am taking the wife to a funeral directors.
Wendy has been a hairdresser for over 20 years, and has been styling, perming, tinting, cutting, washing but mostly befriending clients in all that time.
Sadly, most of her clients are now in the 70's, 80's and 90's. For many, Wendys' visit to their house might be the only visit they see that week or even a fortnight. I guess it was inevitable but these past few weeks and months she's been losing some of her older ones to the kinds of illnesses that take most of us in old age, with a funeral every other week to attend.
Due to that close and long term relationship, Wendy always makes sure she does their hair "one last time" at her own expense and for her own opportunity to say goodbye and thanks. Even though I'm hopelessly bald(!), I can appreciate how much value ladies place on their appearance, and the faith needed to place that trust into someone else's hands.
I have clients spanning decades, many of whom I would now class as friends, but the relationship between a person and their hairdresser is another level. It's intimate, and even though Wendy is an award winning hairstylist, I would bet that her customers cherish the friendly face and sympathetic ear just as much as when the gown comes off and they delight at her craft.
So spare a thought for what I would consider the lowest paid for the highest skilled job there is, and if you've got a good'un, hold onto it.
I do!
