Happy Haldex

Andrew dropped in his stunning Black Audi S3 8V in for an all important haldex service

As we know, all of the main dealers don’t clean out the plastic filter basket which can eventually block and cause haldex problems.

The good news is specialists like ourselves like to preserve the running gear and spend that little bit of time to do the job correctly.

This time was one of the rare occasions the haldex filter was as clean as a whistle. We still remove and clean to satisfy ourselves and tick that box on the job sheet βœ…

We will see this one for some dyno logging soon πŸ‘

Another one boxed off for the weekend β˜€οΈπŸ•ΆοΈ

Zero to hero (with a bump along the way)

We first met Jake when he came to us in his VW Polo 9N3 Gti for general servicing work and diagnostics …We obviously left an impression. πŸ˜‰

When he stepped up and bought this stunning Audi S3 8V it wasn’t long before it was on the ramps ticking off servicing work - not because the service schedule dictated it, sometimes when a car is new to you it just has to be done for peace of mind.

Luckily Jake signs up to the same ethos as us, we always use genuine fluids and filters on servicing.
❀️

But with any new owner there is always that nagging voice in your head…..
Can this be better ?
Can i make a good car great ?
Can i put my own stamp on it without ruining it ?

Its a fine balance which has many factors, as petrol heads as we’re all fighting this fight.

Budget is one of the biggest! Quality products can cost more but do reward in the long run and in many cases give the perfect OEM+ look or feel we all crave.

Jake was soon visiting us with his stock S3 for a set of Bilstein B16’s! A product I personally run on my Golf R estate. I cant bang on enough about how they absolutely transformed my car. Not that the original suspension is terrible... its generally just tired. Suspension technology moves on and the B16 has height and rebound adjustment so you really can play with it to suit you.

With the handling sorted it wasnt long before power was mentioned and with power also comes the requirement for brakes so...

Step up the mighty Trackslag MQB downpipe, paired with a Forge Motorsport race intercooler to compliment his already fitted carbon intake. Were not finished there, VBT supplied front and rear discs, Ferodo front and rear DS2500 pads, Hell brake lines and Motul RBF660 rounds out the package.

And to be honest thats a very good package from some awesome suppliers, dare i say no corners cut there. πŸ‘Œ

Onto the dyno with Nick, TVS TCU software loaded on the 7 speed DSG gearbox and off we go.

3rd pull in, not even at peak boost and everything was logging fine untill the standard IS38 let go 😑

Unfortunatly this is the risky side of tuning, sometimes the side of tuning which people hide... and hide it they do.

Fortunately as a company but most importantly as people we dont. Firstly as everything is logged, we have answers for anything you could ask us during or after a dyno session, no guessing, no BS, just black and white facts.

On this occasion, and it can happen, a slightly tired turbo when pushed can let go. It has to be something people go into with eyes wide open and understand the risks. We/you can check a turbo, visual inspection or movement etc but there is always a risk. We understand that people are excited to have a tuned car and this type of scenario really does burst a bubble.

Its how we deal with it going forward and Jake on this occasion had the perfect attitude, can we upgrade πŸ‘

Step forward our DT-450
Our in house developed IS38 hybrid in partnership with Enhanced Turbos! We are getting through these turbos and they really do share and in some areas out perform powermax, depending on setups.

We strapped this on with the included fitting kit, changed the oil and filter and went back to Nick on the dyno.

This session went perfectly with power settling 433 BHP and 564 NM on a slightly warm sticky day this one made all of the difference. A huge difference in power and most important at this level not loosing the drivability. In nicer conditions...? 450bhp all day long which is bang on for what these turbos are capable of.

By Order Of The Dealers πŸ‘‘

Andrew came to us on recommendation from our local Audi Dealership to have a walnut blast carbon clean and injector testing and it proved to be the right move.

After chasing some rough running and fuel smells the car it landed at DT HQ for us to look over.

Manifold off, 10 injectors out and over to Colin on the ASNU test rig, initial inspection revealed a deteriorated top seal on one of the High pressure GDi injectors. With that easy fix out of the way it was onto the next step of recording test results.

Initial results show a slightly lower static flow result on injector number 1 of the MPi’s. πŸ€”

We get these results by firing the injectors in our Asnu test rig in a controlled environment at 4 bar over a 20 second period to see if we have balanced injectors. From this test and the fluid they produce we can then work out the cc of each injector.

We then proceed to clean and service the injectors and go through the test process again, record the results to see if we have any gains are to be had.

As you can see from the pic below number 1 injector was still lagging behind. This injector passed all of the other tests and still falls within the 5% window but clearly isnt on par with the other 4. Our recommendation on this is to change the injector, it only ever going to get worse and sometimes when your this deep on this type of engine and budget allows….. get it changed πŸ‘

With all 10 injectors now happy, balanced and wearing new shaft seals and relevant -rings we focus on the build up.

With new genuine manifold gaskets fitted, smoke leak test passed and a logging session complete, this one is ready to go back to the customer.

Good Times 😎

Clean Sheet!

If youve ever had the pleasure of seeing Chris's beautiful Porsche 964 at a show then you'll know just why his mantelpiece is full of awards!

It is an all out baller style, clean as you will ever see and very usable Show Piece! The level of detail is crazy and it takes serious effort from him to keep it this mint.

It is used though, which means it needs an MOT every year. And no clean classic car guy likes a dirty MOT history so Chris booked it in for a good pre MOT Inspection and test.

And its just as well he did.

Yes the car is stone mint, but did you know you can fail an MOT for a fog light tell tale light being out? No not the fog light --> the little "tell tale" light on the switch so that you know the fog lights are on. Its no surprise this one slipped through the net, as how often do you check yours? That was an easy fix! The front droplinks were also identified as minors from a boot not being secure so we also sorted a pair of them too.

And then no surprise the car flew through its test, with no issues and the sheet remained clean.

Just like every aspect of the car, the effort was very much worth it πŸ‘Œ

Cheers Chris! Enjoy it pal

Past its best!

MaCauley's clutch was way past its best, and if he was honest it had been for a while.

It would be easy to write a post with a picture of a trashed clutch and remark on how we saved the car with our TTRS conversion yada yada yada...

That is what happened of course, but I still love it when a mint and striking car crosses our door. This belting ED30 just caught our eye and you can see why.

They really did something good with the Mk5 styling and Edition add ons. It wont ever be a true classislc car, but keep them well maintained and they will turn heads forever.

Dad wagon!

Scott is a returning customer to us many times over and being a mature bloke with responsibilities he just seems to hit the nail on the head with regards to tuning.

He has had his Golf R Wagon for years now and loves it. It ticks many boxes for his hectic busy family life. He wants to keep it mint though, so whilst he has owned the car a good while, he felt adamant that the servicing and maintenance side of ownership needed to come first - our sentiments exactly!

To that end, over multiple trips to us he has been through every serviceable item on the car, including some common MQB issues such as carbon cleaning, injector servicing and the dreaded water pump.

All in the run up with the hope of getting the car tuned. Yes the kids need to get to football, but c'mon all of us petrolheads need a little fun in our lives. Even though we know this car very well, it still got health checked before it even seen the dyno. No surprise it flew through that.

The before runs found a healthy and efficient car doing its job very well which is always a great start. Too often this isnt the case around here so take note anyone with tuning on their mind - the car needs to be mint before, to end up mint after πŸ˜‰

The DSG checked out and was gifted the TVS sprinkling of joy. The box was good before but with the DSG cracks smoothed over it is sublime now.

The up front efficiency helped out massively when it came to the tuning, and this car could have easily left with Stg2 levels of torque. It was making 550Nm from a very easy 1.6 bar of boost. With no intake and therefore no surge problem and a smidge less boost we settled on a nice and linear 1.5 bar and a pretty glorious output.

Imagine a super smooth, mega clean dad wagon Golf R. It doesnt annoy anyone. It doesnt pop and bang. It gets the kids to practice no problem.

Also goes like s**t off a shovel πŸ’₯

"Warp warp warp"

Its hugely interesting for us to see the MANY ways a Cam Magnet can fail.

Mostly it is with rough running at idle only. And a very high percentage of them are on the intake cam.

Alex came up from Ripon as her local place couldnt get to the bottom of the weird "warp warp warp" noise coming from her exhaust on partial throttle. It only occurred between 1600-2000 RPM too. They had carried out some good mechanical checks so it wasnt wasted for her, but they suggested that it was time to hand over to somewhere like DT to get to the bottom of it.

We advised Alex that if a condition presents it self intermittently, then typically there are signs in the data ALL of the time. Its just not bad enough to feel it all of the time.

Note - if your car makes a weird noise we will always need you to do your best impression of it when you bring your car down. It helps us pinpoint the noise, plus it gives us a little giggle. Well done Alex!

She took us out on a drive to show the condition and we then logged the data on a test drive. The issue whilst only slightly detectable, was obvious from the logs. The Exhaust Cam position was all over the place! And yet under full load or idle it behaved itself!

A new pair of cam magnets fitted and another logged drive completed the job and sealed the deal. The cam magnet operation was now perfect.

Enjoy the drive home Alex, without the "warp warp warp" πŸ˜‚
