If you receive a parking charge notice and believe it was issued incorrectly or illegally - DO NOT PAY!!! DO NOT GIVE UP!! They will mug you off at first, but APPEAL and if they have no genuine evidence they will DROP IT!! WIN! WIN! See a sample appeal letter in the first instance (many examples online too):

Dear Sir,
RE: Parking Charge Reference – NE*****
“Not parked correctly within the markings of the bay”.
I refer to the above parking charge reference NE***** dated ** (insert date) **. It alleges that the registered keeper of the vehicle did not ‘park correctly within the markings of the bay’.
I absolutely reject this and dispute any liability, the parking charge has been issued unfairly and that I don’t need to pay, for the following reasons:
On reviewing your photographic evidence submitted, the evidence is wholly insufficient and there is simply no proof offered to satisfy either a burden of proof in either a criminal case (beyond all reasonable doubt) or a civil case (balance of probabilities). There is simply insufficient evidence and it is both unfair and unreasonable to attempt any enforcement in this way.
There is no evidence in the photographs and from the bizarre angle adopted of the photographer, it is impossible to see how you have come to this conclusion, none of my tyres are touching any white lines! Absolutely none of the photos to show any infraction of the marked bay. You have presented no evidence whatsoever of my tires even touching the white lines of the bay, nor causing any remote obstruction, hazard or inconvenience to other customers using the car park, by the alleged infraction? I would suggest proper examples of such are as below:
I note that you are members of The International Parking Community (IPC) and have additionally adopted their resolution process under The Independent Appeals Service… I will appeal to them if you reject this letter. I have had a look at both their Code of Practice and ‘Marking The Lines’ publications and there is no clear guidance on this matter. It therefore appears to be to be entirely arbitrary and in the absence of any solid & compelling evidence. I therefore insist that you cancel this parking charge as it simply cannot be justified.
Yours sincerely,
******
