🎆 Happy Bonfire Night! If you’re heading to a display this evening, a little extra care on the roads goes a long way.

Expect busier streets around parks, lots of people on foot in dark clothing, and the odd unexpected bang. Smoke can drift across the road and cut your visibility, so slow down and give yourself more time to react.

It’s also peak season for misted-up windscreens. The quickest way to clear one is to run your air con alongside the heater, because it pulls moisture out of the air. If your air con hasn’t felt cold for a while, or your windows take ages to clear, it may be due a regas or a check. The Highway Code asks you to make sure your windows are thoroughly demisted before you set off.

🔋 Is your battery ready for the toughest few months of its year?

Cold mornings put far more strain on a car battery. The engine is harder to turn over, and at the same time you’re running the lights, heater and heated screen for longer. A battery that coped fine all summer can suddenly give up on the first frosty morning.

Flat batteries are one of the most common causes of winter breakdowns. The warning signs are often there beforehand: a slow, laboured start, lights dimming as you turn the key, or a battery light on the dash. Lots of short journeys don’t help either, because the battery never gets the chance to fully recharge.
