And finally, number 5 of the top 5 reasons learners are failing their driving tests is:

5. Not responding to traffic lights in time
Not paying attention to traffic lights, surprisingly, rounds off the list. Not reacting in time is the common fault here.

Some learner drivers are either driving through a light about to turn red at a junction when the road seems clear has been an issue.

Not moving ahead on a green light when the junction is clear has also been a common fault, as it potentially shows you aren’t paying attention to what’s around you.

Number four of the top 5 reasons learners are failing their driving tests is:

4. Incorrect or lazy steering.
Lazy steering is also among the common reasons why learners fail. This is usually from steering too early or too late.

Another common mistake is letting the wheel slip through their hands to correct itself to a straight position when taking a corner, resulting in not being in control of the car.

Would you know how to respond in an emergency?

Drivers are often first on the scene when someone suffers a cardiac arrest, meaning that knowing CPR could save a life.

If done effectively, it can more than double the chance of someone surviving a cardiac arrest, which is why from 2026 the theory test will include CPR and defibrillator questions.

As part of the changes, car and motorcycle theory test candidates will need to familiarise themselves with CPR techniques and how to use automated external defibrillators.

Number three of the top 5 reasons learners are failing their driving tests is:

3. Failing to drive off safely.
Incorrectly moving off is another big reason why people fail their driving test, and there are a number of ways in which you might have to ‘move off’ during the exam.

It’s expected that you should be able to move off, making the correct observations, from the side of a road, from a traffic jam, from behind a parked car and on a hill.

The second of the top 5 reasons learners are failing their driving tests is:

2. Not using mirrors correctly.
Learners are failing from not using their mirrors enough, but also from making an observation error from them too, such as failing to notice a vehicle close to them.

Should you change lanes anyway and cause the other vehicle to slow down, you could receive a minor fault.

According to government data there are 5 top reasons learners are failing their driving tests:

1. Not making effective observations at junctions.
Making decisions and observations is a huge part of learning to drive, but failing to make effective ones is the most common reason why learners fail. Around 37% of incidents on the road are due to drivers not looking properly, so this is something examiners are always on the lookout for.

It’s imperative that you are aware of what’s around you, particularly before pulling out of a junction or roundabout.

Observation errors that would result in a ‘driving fault’ or a ‘minor’ would include looking too late before moving off, incorrectly judging the speed of an approaching vehicle and pulling out in front of them or making too little observations when using a slip road to join another road.

Would you know what to do if your vehicle broke down?

If you’re on the motorway and this happens, you should try and pull into a service area or leave the carriageway at the next exit. If you can’t, move into the left lane or to a place of relative safety and exit your vehicle safely.

But sometimes neither of these options are possible. In this case, you should:

🚗 stay in your vehicle
🚨 keep your seat belt and hazard warning lights on
📞 call 999 immediately and ask for the police

Going to be taking your theory test in 2026?

From early 2026, CPR and defibrillator questions will be added to the car and motorcycle theory test.

Drivers are often first on the scene when someone suffers a cardiac arrest, so knowing what to do could help save someone’s life.

You can now book a theory test using the Signly British Sign Language (BSL) translation service 🎉

We want our services to be accessible to everyone. Our vision is for all users to be able to independently book a theory test and give candidates the confidence to do their best by offering more accessible services and support.

Since the new service was introduced in September 2021, we’ve been making continuous improvements to the booking service to help you book your test.

As part of this work, we’ve launched a BSL online translation service for when you book a theory test on GOV.UK. The service allows users to select written paragraphs to be translated into BSL videos – the first of its kind to be introduced across government.

To make the theory test service more accessible we’ve also made other changes including:

- reminder notifications for uploading documents
- scanning identity documents

Adding BSL to the theory booking test was a collaboration with Kainos.
