Customer states -

The brake pedal has no resistance and brakes don’t stop the car very well.

Diagnosis - the V lines were re filled with fluid with a pressure tester and visual checks made for leaks. It was nosed that the passenger rear wheel appeared wet so the drum was removed and I was presented with this…
The wheel cylinder seals had burst and the fluid had leaked and created a paste with all the dust, similarly the strivers side had also became to weep. Also the parking brake arm had seized up causing it to bind.

Fix - new shoes, fitting kit, wheel cylinders, a good clean up and bleed all round, and the car was back on the road for a very happy customer…

BMW water leaks,

Oddly I had 2 of these on the same day this week, exact same pipe cracked in the same place on both… unfortunately BMW hide one of the bolts behind the intake manifold , meaning a 10 minute job takes a lot longer, removing all the parts out of the way, but, it’s a good excuse to change the swirl flaps (which are kindly built into the gasket) and clean out the bores while it’s apart.

Ride height level sensor fix.

This wiring, believe it or not, had been repaired somewhere else, unfortunately it was never going to last with poorly soldered dirty connections, other chafed wires and the connector itself was broken.
A new connector was soldered in with a new section of wiring, insulated wrap and retaining clip to hold it in place securely. All working as intended.

Following up on an advisory I put on a service earlier this week.

The rear bush on this lower arm had worn and collapsed so the arm was now resting on the subframe.
Usually a fairly quick job, this one was a bit more of a task as the bolt on the front bush was trapped by the gearbox. This meant the subframe had to be lowered just to remove it.
Once it was off you could see where damage had been done from where the arm has been rubbing.

Saturday jobs this week,

1- Replacing this boost pipe on a Mercedes. Recovery had made a temporary repair to get the car home. Nice new one fitted and back on the road.

2- Brake pads on another Mercedes on my way back, however a nice simple job became an ordeal when one of the wheel bolts was found to be rounded off and way overtightened (from where somewhere had used an air gun to do them up). Nothing a bit of time and effort couldn’t sort out. Bolt drilled and extractor used to remove so the brakes could be completed.

3- Third Mercedes of the day, front and rear brakes, luckily all the bolts came out ok on this one so happy days.

Customer states -

My van failed its MOT because a brake light was inoperative, they tried a new bulb but it hasn’t fixed the fault.

Diagnosis -

The brake light unit was removed to check the fault and I was presented with the attached image.
The amount of times I’ve seen this kind of bodge job electrics on camper van conversions is untrue.
The wiring was all different lengths connected with unsuitable household wiring connectors and random crimp connectors all wrapped up in electrical tape. It appeared that the van must have once had a trailer hitch wired up (badly) but when it was removed they couldn’t be bothered to remove the excess wiring and just chopped it off.

Fix -

The excess wiring was removed along with all the rusty connectors and crimps. A new section of loom was soldered in and wrapped in insulation, all contact points cleaned up and put back together, the brake light now fully functional.
Unfortunately I neglected to get a picture of the final wiring repair, but it was a lot tidier than it was to begin with.

Another dangerous defect.

I was called out to check this car over this week as the steering felt strange and there was a knocking/rattle.
After a test drive, there did appear to be a rattle on the passenger front wheel area. The car was raised and play in suspension etc was checked, and came back fine, but when the wheel was shocked, there was a definite rattle.
It turned out that the calliper pins were left loose after somewhere else had replaced the brakes. Unfortunately, however, they weren’t just loose, they had been cross threaded and all the treads had been stripped out. At this point it was obvious that this car should never have left the forecourt of wherever did this, as it was unsafe.
A new set of calliper pins was sourced and a thread insert used so that they could be fixed securely.
It was also noted that the pads had been incorrectly fitted and the set used somehow had come with 4 outer pads (inner and outer have different retaining clips and should be 2 of each) although not a huge issue as the pads still fit securely in the carrier. it just seemed like a confusing cherry on top.

Customer states -

My car started making a knocking noise while driving, now it won’t start and the engine is smoking.

Diagnosis -

Turning over the engine to confirm the fault, it was clear that there was a problem with the engines compression.
Further inspection found that cylinder 1 snd 2 injectors were half out of the engine, only held in by the feed pipes. The spill pipes were also damaged so would need replacing.
Half of the injector clamp bolt was found on top of the engine, the rest still screwed into the top of the engine.

Fix -

The broken bolt had to be removed from the head, luckily with the right tool it came out quite easily.
Next the injectors were removed, new seals were installed on the rocker cover as well as the copper injector washers. A new clamp bolt was used to rescue the injectors at the correct torque.
A new set of spill pipes were installed and feed pipes reconnected.

The car was then started and ran fine again 👌.
