Not my words, the words of another instructor Chris Smith but I agree wholeheartedly with what’s said!

When people tell me, “I couldn’t do your job” or “You must have the patience of a saint,” I always smile. Because the truth is, teaching people to drive isn’t the challenge most imagine.

My pupils are NOT the problem.
They are trying, learning, and putting themselves out there on the road where everything feels new.
The real challenge comes from how other drivers behave around them.

Impatience 😤
Aggression 😡
A refusal to give space 🤨

Every single Learner is someone’s child, grandchild, sibling or friend.
They are stepping into a car and facing their fears, while juggling mirrors, pedals, traffic, and road signs all at once.
Some of them are only just learning how to believe in themselves.

When you see a Learner hesitate...
- Don’t roll your eyes.
- Don’t tailgate.
- Don’t make them feel smaller than they already do.
Instead, take a breath and remember your own first drives.
Think back to the nerves that made your hands shake on the steering wheel.

Confidence is built slowly.
It takes time and it takes kindness from everyone on the road.

If you can give a Learner a few seconds more, a little more space, you’ll help me as an instructor to guide them through the tricky moment safely.
The next time they face it, they’ll do so with far more understanding and courage.

That’s how safe drivers are created.

Not through pressure or intimidation, but through patience and respect.

From a fellow driving instructor 🙏
