Most learner drivers don’t struggle with driving…

They struggle with what they are telling themselves while doing it.

β€œI can’t do this.”
β€œI’m going to mess this up.”
That’s not driving ability…
that’s mindset.

And when you change that…
everything changes.

Calmer. Clearer. More in control.

That’s what I help you build.

Hey guys, just going through my day and trying to reflect a little after spending time with different students today and its got me thinking, this is something I see a lot, Now i often get students thinking they are bad at driving. When really, its not the driving, It’s the anxiety. That feeling when there mind won’t slow down. They often are overthinking everything and already feel like they have messed up before even getting started. Then a mistake happens and it just confirms it in there head. But honestly, its not always there driving
But more there mind just doing too much at once.
So its so important to try to just slowing it down.
To breathe and to focus on one thing.
So If this sounds like you, whether it be in driving or in everyday life then

πŸš— A simple driving technique that can completely change the way you drive

One thing many learner drivers struggle with is feeling like their brain is trying to process too many things at once.

Mirrors.
Speed.
Other cars.
Pedestrians.
Road signs.

It can quickly start to feel overwhelming.

A really powerful technique called commentary driving can help with this.

It simply means saying out loud what you can see and what you are about to do.

For example:

Parked cars ahead… checking mirrors… easing off the gas… positioning slightly right.

This helps organise your thinking, slow your mind down and spot hazards earlier.

It can be especially helpful for learners whose minds process things quickly, including people with ADHD.

Give it a try next time you're driving.

Small changes in thinking can make a big difference to your driving.

Anxiety about driving again? You are NOT alone.

I work with so many people who already have their driving licence

but after time away from driving, anxiety and panic can creep in and completely knock their confidence.

That’s why I’ve created an Anxiety Aware Refresher Driving Plan at AJM Road Ready πŸ’™
It’s calm, supportive, and built around small steps, not pressure.
✨ No rushing
✨ No judgement
✨ No just get on with it attitude
This approach is about:

βœ” Feeling safe in the car again
βœ” Understanding panic (not fighting it)
βœ” Rebuilding confidence at your pace.

If this post helps even one person feel less alone, it’s worth sharing.

πŸ‘‰ Please like & share this post β€” you never know who might need to see it today.

The Mind Behind the Wheel: 7 Psychological Realities of Driving πŸ§ πŸ›£πŸš¦

As Driving Instructors, we know that being a great driver is about more than just steering and shifting,it's about understanding how your brain handles the road!

The human brain wasn't evolved to move at 70 mph. To cope with that speed, it uses Heuristics which is mental shortcuts to process information.

Learning to drive is essentially the process of training these shortcuts until they become automatic.

Here are 7 fascinating ways your psychology takes over when you're in the driver's seat:

1) Proprioception: Ever feel like the car is an extension of your body? Your brain eventually starts treating the bumpers like your own skin, allowing you to judge gaps without even thinking.

2) Highway Hypnosis: Ever arrive home with no memory of the drive? Your subconscious takes over the mechanical task so your conscious mind can rest. It's a sign of mastery, but a reminder to always stay alert!

3) Fundamental Attribution Error: Ever feel like everyone else is a bad driver? When we make a mistake, we blame the sun, when someone else does, we assume they're just reckless.

4) Motor Mirroring: Ever find yourself braking in the passenger seat? Your brain is so conditioned to hazards that it triggers the physical impulse to brake, even when your feet aren't near the pedals.

5) Cognitive Load: Ever struggle to park because the music is too loud? To perform complex spatial tasks, your brain mutes sounds to dedicate all its power to your eyes and hands.

6) Deindividuation: Inside a metal box, we can stop seeing cars as people and start seeing them as obstacles. This lowers our inhibitions and often leads to road rage.

7) The Invisible Gorilla Effect: If you focus too hard on one thing like the car ahead, you can become perceptually blind to hazards right in front of you, like a cyclist.

At AJM Road Ready, we help you master these mental shortcuts so you can stay safe and confident on every journey.

Which of these have you experienced? Let us know in the comments!
