Nick shared how much of a pleasure it was working on this re-trimmed Scania tractor unit for MCL.

The job involved refitting a Kelsa Hi-bar, complete with three laser lamps and two LED rotating beacons.

Front and rear LED strobes were supplied and installed, along with a DVR four camera system, an internal and external handbrake warning alarm, a DVS compliant radar system, and a turn left/right alarm.

This truck was our original fit years ago, but the cab suffered fire damage. As part of the repair, carried out by Ross Gordon Commercials in Bristol, we were asked to remove and refit the undamaged items from the old shell, and to replace anything that could not be reused.

South Wales HGV operators โ€” you will have already heard about the Progressive Safe System.

It's already the law in London, and the rest of the UK looks like it's following.

Since October 2024, any HGV over 12 tonnes with a low Direct Vision Standard (DVS) star rating must have a Progressive Safe System fitted before it can legally operate in Greater London. That means AI-powered cameras, blind spot sensors, front detection systems, audible turn alarms, and hazard signage โ€” all working together to protect cyclists and pedestrians who might otherwise be invisible to a driver.

The fines for non-compliance? Up to ยฃ550 per day.

And it's not just a London issue for much longer. Manchester is already in conversations about introducing a similar scheme, and industry experts believe other cities โ€” potentially including Bristol โ€” won't be far behind.

If you run HGVs in South Wales and your vehicles make any trips into London, you need to act now. And even if you don't, getting ahead of this legislation makes good business sense.
