Case study: Sensors

Does your VW California show the roof as being open even when it’s closed? This is something you shouldn’t ignore, even if your control panel does not yet show the dreaded 1000 error code.

The electrohydraulic elevating roof uses 4 hall effect sensors to register that the roof is fully up or down. Over time these hall sensors fail, 5 years seems to be a fair estimate for their life expectancy, less for campers used in damp coastal areas. Once they fail the control unit doesn’t know where the roof is, which can cause the 1000 error code and often results in the roof being stuck closed or open.

We have seen people quoted by dealers for replacement of the entire roof wiring loom, this isn’t normally necessary. The sensors themselves are a BMW part and at Enclave Campers we have the automotive electrical ability to splice new sensors onto the existing loom, we then cover the connection with waterproof heat shrink.

So if your California roof is having trouble knowing if it’s up or down, it’s well worth booking it in for a sensor service, before it gives you problems down the road.

Case study: Clogged hydraulic pump assembly

A customer got in touch with a T6 California, which recently had a roof hydraulic cylinder replaced by a VW dealer. The roof then developed a list when opening and closing, sagging to one side (which got worse over time and was much worse than the photo shows when we finally saw it in our workshop.)

After multiple trips back and forth, the dealer had recommended replacement of the roof hydraulic pump, with a quote in the thousands to match £££.

At this point the customer got in touch with Enclave Campers. Our diagnosis indicated that the issue was in the hydraulic control valve assembly attached to the pump. We dug deeper and found a large amount of debris in the hydraulic system, probably from the aforementioned failed cylinder.

These roofs use a complex set of hydraulic valves and flow dividers, housed inside a control valve assembly. These can clog and cause issues with raising, lowering and even sagging.

The system was fully dismantled, all valves and lines flushed with fresh fluid. The roof now operates as normal, no need to replace the expensive pump assembly, only refurbish.

In summary, the happy customer now has a fully working roof and only had to pay a bill in the hundreds, rather than thousands. If your California roof needs some attention, get in touch.

At Enclave Campers we are pleased to announce repair and maintenance services for the electrohydralic pop-up roof, fitted to the T5 through T6.1 VW California.

There will be follow up posts exploring case studies of repairs to both the hydraulic pump assembly and hall sensors.

A customer got in touch with a 2020 Boxer. They reported issues with their leisure batteries and a bad ‘rotten egg’ like smell.

The vehicle was presented with a simple voltage sensitive relay (VSR), commonly known as a split charge system. We don’t recommend this setup for newer Euro 6 vans as it can cause problems. There was no isolation or fusing between the vehicle battery and these two leisure batteries, resulting in potentially dangerous release of hydrogen sulphide gas while charging, hence the ‘rotten egg’ smell.

❌ Split charger on a Euro 6 van
❌ Inadequate fusing
❌ Customer breathing hydrogen sulphide gas
❌ Undersized cables for inverter capacity

Improvements made:

✅ EFB batteries upgraded to a single 280 Ah Lithium battery with bluetooth app monitoring
✅ 30 Amp Euro 6 compatible battery to battery charger
✅ Solar charge controller upgraded to MPPT (and an isolator fitted)
✅ Inverter cables resized to correct current rating
✅ High current fuse box and bus bars
✅ Customer requested accessible “big red panic button” for safe isolation

This system was not installed by the customer and it was not a DIY job. If you suspect you might have issues with your leisure system do get in touch.

This tidy Transporter T5 came to us for a fresh floor, diesel heater and some rear windows.

Altro floor fitted in the tasteful Urban Cherry, two Kiravans windows across the barn doors and a 2kW Autoterm heater fitted underslung. Fuel taken directly from the tank and a damaged underbody panel replaced for a California spec one, to keep that new heater safe from road debris.

The owner of this handsome Transit Custom got in touch before Christmas to discuss having a diesel heater fitted. The heater would need to fit around an existing conversion. This van does double duty as a camper and people transporter, so the outlet vent needed to work in both configurations.

2kW Autoterm heater fitted, fuel taken from the tank via the Ford OEM pickup. Comfort controller to allow for thermostat and timer functions.
