The Forgotten Child 💙
When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, everyone quite rightly focuses on the child fighting for their life.

But what about the brother or sister standing quietly beside them?

This is Adam, Brian and Helen.

Adam was too young to understand cancer. He didn’t understand chemotherapy or hospitals.

But he understood when Mum and Dad weren’t there.

He understood why his best friends disappeared for weeks at a time.

And eventually, he understood that the hands he used to hold had become a photograph he now looks at.

Thousands of siblings live this reality. Many worry they’ll get ill too. Some fear they might die like their brother or sister. They carry anxiety, trauma and grief, often without anyone asking how they are coping.

Yet there is no statutory framework recognising or supporting siblings of seriously ill children. No legal duty to identify them. No guarantee of emotional support. No consistent help in schools.

That’s why we’re campaigning for siblings to be recognised as potentially vulnerable pupils, ensuring they receive the support they deserve from the moment a diagnosis is made.

Because when one child is diagnosed, the whole family is affected.

It’s time we stopped forgetting the siblings. 💙
