Mercedes A35 AMG, in for rough idle and underpowered.

Diagnostics revealed misfire cylinder four.
Checked the service interval of the spark plugs, which is 45,000miles or 36 months.

Our car has 55,000miles and is 60 months old. Had a look through the service history, no sign of plugs being done. An oil and filter only change had been done at 43,000 miles, suggesting that the plugs were not done on time.

The plugs are buried on these cars and require a bit of work to access them. Once we got them out it was very apparent they had never been changed, Mercedes branded plugs and filthy. On one plug the gap was being bridged by crusty horrible stuff. (Pictured).

New plugs fitted, test driven and misfire had disappeared.

Skoda in for fault related to the 4 wheel drive system.
Following some diagnostics we established an issue with the Haldex unit.

Many cars are fitted with a Haldex four wheel drive system. Basically a clutch in the rear differential that engages the rear wheels when the car feels it needs the extra grip.

The Haldex system has its own oil separate from the rear differential oil. The oil is pumped by the pump and is filtered by a gauze on the inlet of the pump. It’s common for the gauze to clog up and sometimes burn out the pump.

The service interval for the Haldex is around 30,000 miles, this oil change dramatically reduces the failure of the pump .

Haldex units are fitted to lots of BMW, Volvo, Seat, Skoda, VW, Audi, Porsche and many more.

If you have one, make sure it’s serviced regularly.

Ford Focus diesel arrived to us in limp mode and engine management light on.

Fault codes, engine oil quality and dpf temperature sensor reading too high.

So the car could not regenerate the dpf because when it tried the temperature exceeded 1000 degrees Celsius.

Dropped the oil out the engine , should be 3.9L we collected 6.2 in a bucket and it smelt strongly like diesel. This could explain why the temp sensor is getting a high reading as the engine will be burning this while trying to regenerate.

But why ?

We did a leak back test on the fuel injectors, which showed us that no 3 injector is putting back less fuel than that the other three which are pretty similar to each other. So no 3 is over fuelling the cylinder the extra fuel is washing past the piston rings and ending up in the sump with the oil. 2.3 L worth since the last oil change in August.

Spoke to the customer, car got a turbo elsewhere in August as it blew up, 88000mile car shouldn’t need a turbo. We recon the injector has been diluting the oil to the point that the turbo wasn’t being lubricated and caused it to blow, the oil was changed when the turbo was done but the cause was never fixed.

It’s reared its head again and this time I think we got it before it caused another turbo failure.

All in all a good job done!

Peugeot partner in for a clutch, full service, rear brakes and an ABS issue.

The release bearing was the culprit in the clutch issues and was in pieces in the gearbox, also signs of the failure on the pressure plate fingers. Horrible sound when running .

All repairs completed and van away to work another day.

Subaru Impreza WRX Prodrive Wagon project.

We bought the wagon as it has been fitted with a new fully forged motor running a conservative 350bhp. The car is a genuine prodrive with certificate. It was in need of some restoration or it would end up in the scrapyard.

So far we have stripped, rust treated and coated the full front end , floor pan and tunnel. As well as adding a stage 2 clutch kit and replacing all the subframes and suspension components.

When we moved into the back of the car, we found a lot more rot than we had expected, the pics here are of the drivers rear suspension turret, completely rotten through both skins . The work is not complete on this corner but this is the biggest patch done and hopefully means we don’t have a great deal left to do on this side .

Looking forward to the day we get this car back in the road .

🚨🔧Skills development update🔧🚨

So as we are getting closer to the end of the year I wanted to share some information with you regarding our commitment to providing skills development and opportunity to local young people.

This year we had three young men all from between Buchlyvie and Balfron, who are all still at the high school doing work experience in the garage at different times.
We have done this in previous years, Tilly for example did work experience with ourselves and then managed to get an apprenticeship in Formula 3 as a mechanic, she is doing really well and still checks in with us from time to time.

One of this years work experience cadets John who finished school in June this year went onto start a three year apprenticeship in light vehicle repair and maintenance with ourselves.
Making him our second apprentice, Lewis our 3rd year apprentice from Killearn is doing really well and less than a year away from being fully qualified.

All very exciting and not possible without your continued support.
