Almost like an airfix spitfire model, almost!
Some of these components were in a fearful state, needing either restoring or in a few cases remaking.
Anyhow now they are resplendent in their electro plated glory and should see out generations of owners….

It’s funny how things revisits one, the Semmence Special was the first vintage race car I ever worked on (new head gasket and valve job) many many moons ago and now it’s come back for a full racy seat, seat frame and firewall. Of course much of the work was carried out by .pritchard.182 for the full made in Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 effect.
The seat is one of our standard Maserati race seats, they knew their onions and you can’t really improve on the meastro’s of Bologna artistry, by the way there’s not one weld on any of this Aluminium work, all shrunk, stretched and formed in the age old ways, which seams to have been lost when you look around.

So much of our work is taking the materials to the brink of things, one has to feel and let instinct take over.
I suppose it’s alchemy in a way, each day and each job presents new problems that no one other than yourself can fathom out, the materials always try and do one thing, it’s our job to persuade them to do what we have in our minds eye.

The first criteria is always “will it do the job well”, equally important for me is “is it as sculptural” all the cars I really admire capture you as you peel back each layer, there’s depth within them, much as life I suppose.

Putting her through her paces on the rolling road, always nerve wrecking when it’s nearly a 100 years old and there’s only one in existence!
Anyhow after this run, we drove her back over the Berwyn mountains, as near the Alps as you’ll find to really test a car as you’ll find in Britain, she breezed it and now ready for her next chapter.....

Carrying out extensive road testing to iron out any little niggles before fine tuning on the rolling road.

The working workshop with the Aster done and dusted...
To my knowledge it is the only surviving example of this model, we always enjoy the challenge of something that there is no information or knowledge to speak of, it makes you go back to basic principles, it’s where ones experience comes to the fore.
To get the car to this point we had to straighten the chassis on the surface table, rebuild both the rear axle and gearbox with a touch of re engineering to improve reliability and function, rebuild the engine and other running gear, new front hubs, new ash frame, new body (we did save the scuttle top and rear tail panel), design and manufacture the wings with a touch of sophistication or even raunchiness! And a full re wire, the paint was entrusted to who are the only people I will consider using when quality is paramount.

A busy workshop scene, the Aster as it arrived in the background, alongside a Daimler, Talbot, Jaguar E type and Maserati 8CL, a fair old mixture, it’s the same skills to fix all these cars!

Three finished Lea Francis chassis ready for a new lease of life!

All of them had had a hard life, one seriously bent, so a case of de riveting, straightening, repair patching, repairing a new front spring hanger so you couldn’t tell it’s not original, in fact you can’t see where we’ve been, that my friends is being made in Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
