Five things to be aware of during corona virus pandemic if your business provides services in or from vehicles:

1) Make sure people work in the same team every day. Use fixed teams or shift patterns to reduce the number of people each person comes into contact with.
2) Arrange work spaces to keep staff apart. Consider using barriers to separate people and introduce back-to-back or side-to-side working.
3) Reduce face-to-face meetings. Encourage calls or video conferences to avoid in-person meetings with external contacts, or colleagues outside someone’s immediate team, wherever possible.
4) Limit handling of goods. Consider having one worker at a time to load and unload vehicles. Introduce electronic paperwork where possible.
5) Communicate and train. Make sure all staff and customers are kept up to date with how safety measures are being used and updated.

These are the priority actions to make your business safe during coronavirus, you should also read the full version of the guidance and make regular risk assessments to ensure safety is maintained at all times.

Information: Applications for the renewal of lorry and bus driving licences during the coronavirus pandemic.

Normally an application to renew a lorry or bus licence at age 45 or over must include a medical examination report (D4) which is signed by a doctor. However, NHS doctors cannot carry out these examinations so lorry and bus drivers are currently unable to obtain D4 medical reports required to support their application.

So, in these special circumstances, a D4 will not be required when applying to renew a lorry or bus licence until further notice. However, this will only apply if the licence has expired or is due to expire on or after 1 January 2020.

However, please note: where a bus or lorry licence is renewed without the production of a valid D4, it will only be valid for a period of one year. For more information go to

Did you know that you can now change the address on your vehicle log book (V5C), as well as your driving licence?

If you need to change your address then why not give it a go? It takes minutes, it’s easy to do and your details will be updated instantly on DVLA’s records.

The new service adds to an already wide range of DVLA transactions that you can do online, including:

Tax your vehicle

Replace a lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed driving licence

Check if a vehicle is taxed

Tell DVLA you’ve sold, transferred or bought a vehicle

Renew your driving licence

All of these services are easier than applying by post, and for driving licence renewals it’s also cheaper to do it online.

Visit GOV.UK to find all of our online services.

Warning about seriously defective aftermarket lorry brake drums
Defective brake drum
Operators are being warned about seriously defective aftermarket brake drums that may be fitted to Scania P400 lorries within their fleet.

We are aware of 2 cases where aftermarket drums, which were not manufactured or supplied by Scania, have failed on P400 lorries.

No front braking
Both lorries were left without front braking and were fully laden.

The drums failed in the same way when the braking surface fractured and separated from the mounting ring. It is believed that this was not due to normal wear and tear.

We have been unable to identify the manufacturer but an image of one of the failed drums is shown below.

Let us know
We are asking operators to let us know if they have similar drums fitted to their lorries and their supplier by calling us on 0117 9543425 or emailing [email protected]

Vehicle safety defects can also be reported at DVSA's online vehicle recalls and faults service

Be proactive for your family friends and Co-workers.

I think after working many years within the caring community and training industry, these measures are obviously and rightly in place due to the rise in cases of contamination from staff to patients, or visitors to patients, from the common spread diseases like influenza, colds, and Nora-virus to na
