Most of us probably don’t give them much thought until a warning light comes on or one goes flat, but your tyres are doing a huge amount of work every time you drive.

They help your car steer, brake, accelerate and stay in contact with the road — and the modern tyre has come a long way from the wooden wheels and early air-filled designs of the Victorian era.

𝐈𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐠, we take a light-hearted look at the **history of the modern car tyre**, including how pneumatic tyres developed, how tread patterns became important, and how radial and tubeless tyres changed motoring.

We also look at why tyre pressure, tread depth and general condition still matter so much for everyday road safety.

When learners start getting private practice with Mum or Dad, there's one small problem…

After 10, 20 or 30 years behind the wheel, most of us have picked up a few habits along the way.

Things like:

👀 Observations becoming a little too casual
↔️ Following other vehicles too closely
💡 Signalling through habit rather than when it's actually needed
🛞 Steering techniques slowly changing over the years
🚦 Treating familiar junctions on autopilot

None of this means you're a bad driver.

But when you're helping someone **learn** to drive, it's important that the advice they receive at home doesn't conflict with what they're being taught during their lessons.

🚗 **𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧?**

A driving lesson should be more than simply getting in the car and driving around for two hours.

You should know **what you're working on, why you're working on it and what progress you're making**.

A good lesson should help you:

✅ Understand your mistakes — not just be told you've made one
✅ Build confidence at your own pace
✅ Practise skills until they start to feel natural
✅ Take more responsibility as your ability improves
✅ Finish knowing exactly what you've achieved and what comes next

For parents, it should also be possible to see that those lessons are actually leading somewhere.

Learning to drive isn't about clocking up hours.

It's about becoming a **safe, confident and independent driver**.

𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟱 ⭐️ 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 👌
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴.

My instructor was Phil Booth. When i was looking for a new driving instructor, i wanted to find someone who i could count on to be there, was fun to learn with and could make sure i understood everything to the highest level.

Phil was all these things and more, he truly cared for what i understood and what i didn’t to help me progress as a driver.

If i ever needed more attention on certain things, we would spend extra time on it or if i simply needed a break we would take five minutes talking. Phil is an amazing driving instructor and without him i wouldn’t have been able to pass!

After a quieter few weeks, school-run traffic is back across Burton upon Trent, Swadlincote, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Coalville.

Whether you’re a learner driver or have been driving for years, it’s worth remembering to:

👀 Look well ahead for children near the road
🛑 Be ready to stop for school crossing patrols
🚶 Take extra care around zebra crossings
🚌 Slow down around school buses as children get on and off
🚗 Avoid parking where you block views near school entrances
⚠️ Adjust your speed when parked cars and busy pavements restrict what you can see

For learners especially, school areas are brilliant practice for developing **observation, anticipation and planning**.

𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟱 ⭐️ 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 👌
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Something that was important to me was finding a driving instructor that was patient and calm. As someone that was extremely nervous I can say Richard put me at ease.

The lessons flew by as they were tailored to my skill level and what I felt comfortable doing. I never felt like anything was too hard. (Even if Richard threw in a few surprises along the way.)

I passed first time with 3 minors and I can safely say I'd recommend Richard and the Mark Jordan team to anyone that is about to start driving!

It could be the key to starting work, going to university, caring for someone or gaining the independence you’ve been waiting for.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭-𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬.

If things don’t go to plan, it may not be as simple as just booking another test. More lessons, instructor availability, work commitments or even moving away can all make a second attempt much harder to organise.

You don’t need to be perfect — but you do need to be ready. ✅

Believe it or not, Britain’s road signs have come a very long way…

🪨 Roman milestones
👉 Old-fashioned fingerposts
☠️ Victorian skull-and-crossbones warning signs
👀 Cat’s eyes
🦓 Zebra crossings
🔺 And finally the familiar signs and road markings we use today

What started as simple directions gradually became a whole visual language for drivers — designed to warn us, guide us and help us plan what’s coming next.

And some of the history is much stranger than you might expect! 😄

I couldn't recommend Mark Jordan Driving enough. I was incredibly nervous before starting but I received a letter outlining exactly what would happen during the first lesson which I found very helpful, and upon meeting Mark my instructor, he put me at ease straight away. As someone who is quite shy I found the prospect of sitting in a car with someone I didn't know quite daunting, but again Mark put me at ease with his friendly and laid back manner. He was always very patient and reassuring when I made mistakes and I always felt safe when driving. Thank you Mark!

Mark is an amazing instructor and I would highly recommend him to anybody who is thinking about learning to drive. I was really nervous before beginning my lessons but Mark put me at ease straight away. Mark is incredibly patient, knowledgeable and friendly which made learning to drive a really enjoyable experience!

Having two hour lessons is really helpful as they allow you to focus on different areas in depth, which helped with growing my confidence and understanding. I really liked the structure of Mark's lessons and having a feedback sheet sent back to me each week was really useful for checking my progress as well as preparing me for the next lesson.

Mark has endless patience and was more than happy to go over things again and again until I felt comfortable. You learn so much from the lessons which I feel will be invaluable going forward. Mark gave me the confidence I needed with driving and I can't thank him enough. Would honestly recommend him to anyone and everyone!
