🚗 Common Problems with DSG Gearboxes – What Should You Look Out For?

DSG gearboxes are renowned for their quick, smooth gear changes and excellent fuel efficiency, but like any mechanical component, they can develop faults over time.

Here are some of the most common warning signs:

⚠️ Jerky or harsh gear changes
Your car should change gear smoothly. If you notice jolting or harsh changes, it's worth getting it checked.

⚠️ Delayed engagement
If there's a noticeable delay when selecting Drive or Reverse, this could indicate an issue with the gearbox or its control system.

⚠️ Warning lights
A gearbox or engine management light shouldn't be ignored. Modern DSG gearboxes are packed with electronics, and a diagnostic check can often identify the problem before it becomes more serious.

⚠️ Slipping gears

✅ Fact: A warning light may disappear temporarily, but the fault code is often still stored in the vehicle's computer. A proper diagnostic check is always worthwhile.

What Is a DSG Gearbox?"

🤔 What's a DSG gearbox?

DSG stands for Direct Shift Gearbox.

It's a type of automatic gearbox that uses two clutches instead of one, allowing it to change gears incredibly quickly and smoothly.

They're popular because they:
✔️ Improve fuel economy
✔️ Offer faster gear changes
✔️ Give a more responsive drive

Like all gearboxes though, they still need servicing at the correct intervals to keep them performing at their best.

🚗 Do automatic gearboxes need servicing?

One of the most common questions we're asked is:-

"My car drives fine. Do I really need to service the gearbox?"

The simple answer is yes.

Although some manufacturers describe their gearbox oil as "sealed for life", gearbox oil still breaks down over time. As it ages, it loses its ability to lubricate and protect the internal components.

Regular servicing can help:-
✅ Improve gear changes
✅ Reduce wear and tear
✅ Prevent expensive repairs
✅ Extend the life of your gearbox

A gearbox service is far less expensive than a gearbox rebuild however is only for maintenance and will not repair a faulty gearbox.

If the gearbox has a current challenge a service could exacerbate the problem so we would always run a diagnostic check before carrying out a service.

Advantages Of A Sequential Gearbox:
Safety: By having to go through each of the gears, you mitigate the risk of dropping into the wrong gear- an act that could have serious repercussions, especially when driving at high speeds.

Clutch Optional: The selector shaft means that there is no need for the vehicle to have a clutch. This allows you to shift gears more quickly, and to focus more on driving.

Speed: As you might be able to tell, the real advantage of an SMG lies in the speed that it offers- which is why they’re often used in motorsports vehicles.

Disadvantages Of A Sequential Gearbox:
Expensive: Most vehicles fitted with an MSG are expensive, especially if you want a newer or flashier make and model.

Noise: This kind of gearbox has a reputation for being incredibly loud, producing a whining sound that is either loved or hated, depending on who you are speaking to and how much they love cars.

Operation: There is a reason that the SMG is typically found in sports cars: it isn’t well suited to driving slowly. Many people find that for everyday driving, it’s “clunky”.

What Is The Difference Between A CVT Gearbox And An Automatic Gearbox?

In a similar fashion to an automatic gearbox, a CVT gearbox requires no input from the driver.
However, where an automatic has shifting gears, a CVT gearbox works on a system of two pulleys.
One pulley is connected to the engine, the other is connected to the wheels and both are connected to each other via a flexible belt.

When the vehicle requires more power, the width of the pulleys changes in response – one widens and the other shrinks, resulting in an infinite number of ‘gears’.
The most common type of CVT gearbox is the pulley mechanism, however, you may come across two other types of CVT: the Toroidal CVT and the Hydrostatic CVT.

The Toroidal CVT employs rotating discs and power rollers which result in the same outcome as the pulley-mechanism of the traditional CVT. These can be found in car manufacturers such as Nissan.
The Hydrostatic CVT, also known as Hydraulic CVT, utilises variable displacement pumps and a hydraulic motor that circulate fluid, producing rotational movement.
