THE PAJERO IS BACK, AND MITSUBISHI JUST MADE IT A SERIOUS 4X4 AGAIN
After five years away, the Mitsubishi Pajero has officially returned. Revealed in Japan today, the all-new fifth-generation Pajero brings back the legendary nameplate as a seven-seat, body-on-frame 4WD flagship, with Mitsubishi clearly aiming to preserve the rugged character that made the original an off-road icon.
The new Pajero is built around a reinforced ladder-frame platform and features Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control system. It also gets Super Select II 4WD, low-range gearing and a rear differential lock, giving the revived SUV genuine off-road hardware rather than simply borrowing the Pajero name.
Power comes from an updated 2.4-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder producing 150 kW and 480 Nm, paired with a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission. Mitsubishi also rates the Pajero for up to 3.5 tonnes of braked towing.
Visually, the new Pajero takes a modern interpretation of its heritage. The upright, squared-off body, muscular wheel arches, sculpted bonnet and distinctive LED lighting give it a much more imposing presence, while the interior moves significantly upmarket with greater emphasis on refinement, sound insulation and premium materials.
One of the coolest details is the return of the iconic Triple Multi Meter. The original rally-inspired instrument cluster has been reimagined digitally, connecting the new SUV directly to the Pajero’s Dakar-era heritage.
Mitsubishi plans to begin introducing the new Pajero in 2026, starting with Thailand, Japan and Australia before expanding into other global markets. After years without a true Pajero, Mitsubishi has not simply revived the badge. It has brought back the hardware to justify it.
