This C1 was in with a worn clutch, which is something we see fairly often on these cars. The Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo use a relatively small clutch assembly, and with lots of town driving, hill starts or stop-start traffic, clutch wear can become noticeable.

Common signs include:

High biting point
Slipping under acceleration
Judder when pulling away
Difficulty setting off smoothly
Biting point no longer feeling central

These also use a manual cable clutch adjustment system, so when the clutch starts to wear, the biting point can become very obvious quite quickly.

Manual gearbox faults can be frustrating because the first symptom often seems small.

A slight crunch into gear.
A stiff or awkward gear change.
A gearbox whine that only appears at certain speeds.
A gear that occasionally jumps out.
A leak that “doesn’t look too bad”.
Or a clutch issue that starts to feel like a gearbox problem.

The trouble is, manual gearbox faults can overlap.

Hard to select gears could be clutch drag, linkage adjustment, worn cables, low oil, synchro wear or internal damage.

A crunch into 2nd or reverse might not have the same cause on every vehicle.

A gearbox jumping out of gear is not something to ignore.

And a noisy gearbox can quickly turn from “just a whine” into a much bigger repair if lubrication or bearing wear is involved.

P288400 – Engine Disconnect is one of those fault codes that can send VW GTE and Audi A3 e-tron owners down a very expensive rabbit hole.

We see this fault regularly on the 0DD / DQ400e hybrid DSG, and it commonly comes with symptoms like:

• gearbox malfunction warnings
• jerky engagement
• intermittent loss of drive
• limp mode

A lot of people immediately jump to mechatronic failure - and yes, issues like gauze filter breakdown, hydraulic pressure loss, solenoid faults and oil contamination are all common suspects.

But here’s the important bit…

This fault code is not always caused by the same issue.

Recently, we’ve also identified other contributing faults during diagnosis, which is exactly why these hybrid DSG systems need proper investigation before parts get thrown at them.

Because once hybrid integration and engine disconnect systems are involved, these gearboxes are a different beast to your standard DSG.

Manual gearbox oil, DSG oil, ATF, DCT fluid - everyone has a brand they trust, and sometimes a brand they avoid for a very specific reason.

For us, Ravenol is definitely one of our firm favourites. We’ve found the quality to be consistently good, and the customer service from the guys has always been excellent too.
