Unfortunately, it has come to the point where I need to make an important change to how bookings are managed.

Since starting Holmes Mechanics Ltd, I have never taken payment or deposits before a job is completed. This decision was made deliberately, as there have been mobile mechanics over the years who have taken customers’ money and disappeared. I have always wanted to operate transparently and fairly.

However, there have been increasing occasions where jobs are cancelled at short notice—sometimes after I have already ordered and received expensive electrical or special-order parts (often £500 or more) which cannot be returned due to supplier policies. When this happens, I am left out of pocket and stuck with parts that cannot be used elsewhere.

Once a vehicle has been diagnosed and parts are confirmed, I book the job in at the earliest convenience for both myself and the customer. This is done to minimise downtime and keep customers on the road. Unlike a garage, I work job-by-job at customers’ addresses. I cannot simply move on to another vehicle if a job is cancelled. A garage has multiple cars waiting on-site; I do not.

When a booking is cancelled, it creates downtime that cannot always be filled at short notice. This directly impacts my income. This is not a hobby—this is my livelihood and my only source of income. Like everyone else, I have bills to pay and a family to support. My financial responsibilities do not stop because a job has been cancelled or the money has been spent elsewhere.

Late cancellations also prevent me from booking other customers who are waiting for availability, as that time slot has already been allocated.

Going forward, the following policy will apply:

• A minimum of 48 hours’ notice is required for cancellations.
• I understand that genuine emergencies do happen and will always be considered fairly.
• Any cancellation with less than 48 hours’ notice will require a non-refundable rebooking fee before a new booking can be made.
• All cancelled jobs are subject to a rebooking fee.

This policy is necessary to protect my business, my time, and my family.
