I’m occasionally asked for driving tips, often whilst in a pub, or other random places (ie not in a car) and though that might sound tricky, I always have the same answer; leave earlier.

Most people are capable of driving pretty well but choose not to because of a ticking clock.

If you’re expecting your journey to take an hour, give yourself an extra 10 minutes. Then add on 5-10 for every hour, depending on the time of day.

Enjoy the drive. Expect others to make an error and forgive them. Remove the words ‘sorry’ and ‘late’ from your vocabulary.

🚦 Rule 196: Pelican crossings are signal-controlled crossings where flashing amber follows the red ‘Stop’ light.

You MUST stop when the red light shows.

When the amber light is flashing, you MUST give way to any pedestrians on the crossing.

If the amber light is flashing and there are no pedestrians on the crossing, you may proceed with caution.

According to today's Grampian Online, North-east motorists are being urged to carry out simple vehicle safety checks if they need to travel.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is asking owners to check their vehicle before they set off and make sure they are SAFE by doing four basic checks.

Vehicles which have not been used frequently can face some common problems such as tyres losing air, so drivers are encouraged to make sure everything is right before travelling.

All of the checks are visual and accessible to motorists and are:

Service or health check if needed.

Air in tyres.

Fill up screenwash.

Examine lights and tyre tread

The reopening of schools means motorists may be on the road more often over the coming weeks.

DVSA’s head of MOT policy Chris Price said: “As schools return, some motorists will need to use their cars more often than they have been recently.

“With more traffic on the road, we want to help everyone to keep their vehicle safe to drive.
