TYRE WIDTH ISN’T THE WHOLE STORY. 🛞🔧

When choosing a motorcycle tyre, it’s easy to focus on the width. But did you know that aspect ratio also plays a key role in determining the correct rim width?

Here’s why. 👇

📐 SAME WIDTH. DIFFERENT PROFILE.

A 130/70-17 and a 130/80-17 are both nominally 130mm wide, but the 130/80 has a taller sidewall.

That difference affects how the tyre flexes and how its profile responds to different rim widths.

🔹 Taller profile – 130/80

A taller sidewall generally has more scope to flex. This allows the tyre to accommodate a narrower rim within the manufacturer's permitted range while maintaining its intended profile.

🔹 Lower profile – 130/70

As aspect ratio decreases, the sidewall becomes shorter and generally stiffer. With less sidewall height available to flex, rim width becomes particularly important in achieving the intended tyre profile.

📖 THE EXAMPLE: BRIDGESTONE BT46

The Bridgestone 2026 motorcycle tyre catalogue provides a great example:

130/70-17 BT46: permitted rim widths of 3.00–4.00 inches.

130/80-17 BT46: permitted rim widths of 2.50–3.50 inches.

Same nominal tyre width. Different aspect ratios. Different permitted rim-width ranges.

The taller 130/80 is approved for a narrower minimum rim than the lower-profile 130/70.

🏍️ THE TAKEAWAY FOR DEALERS

Tyre width alone doesn't determine the correct rim. Aspect ratio, sidewall stiffness and tyre construction all influence the relationship between tyre and rim.

Always check the manufacturer's approved rim-width range for the exact tyre size. Physical fit doesn't necessarily mean correct fitment.

The right tyre size is only half the equation. The right rim matters too.
