"Bl**dy learner drivers!!! Get out of the way! How dare you be on the road".....and because I want to show my impatience and fury at said 17 year old L plater, I'm going to literally drive right up to the bumper of their car or maybe do a manoeuvre past them that falls well short of acceptable driving standards. Like overtaking them whilst they wait to turn right or something silly like that.

It was a long time since I learnt to drive and I don't remember much of it. It was in Cornwall. The busiest it got was Truro and that's tiny compared to even Exmouth and about twice the size of Ottery.

But there are way more cars on the road now and we are all in more of a rush. We do get reports from driving instructors of bad driving but, as someone who is currently teaching a family member, its downright scary how impatient some other drivers are and the appalling manor of driving that they demonstrate. I mean, what is the point in honking impatiently?! What does that achieve?

That 'L' plate means that the driver is the newest, most nervous, least experienced, driver out there. They are going to stall. They are going to roll back. They are going to go under the speed limit. They may not say thank you as their sweaty white knuckles grip the wheel for dear life. And they are defo going to drive a ton worse when another vehicle is pressuring them. Ironically they will drive better than the people that this message is targeted at🤣

If you see an 'L' plate, give the vehicle time and space. Expect unexpected manoeuvres. Expect mistakes. Expect slow junction starts. We were all learners once.

*Putting an L on a police car is potentially opening up a line of comment comedy so Ill brace for that😉

🚗💭 DRIVING TEST NERVES: ARE YOU STRESSED OR JUST EXCITED?

❤️ Your heart is racing.

💦 Your palms are sweaty.

💨 You're breathing a little faster than usual.

Your driving test is about to begin.

You're nervous, right? 😬

But what if I told you that your body reacts to excitement in a very similar way to fear?

🧠 STRESS AND EXCITEMENT – TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN

When we're stressed or excited, our bodies release hormones such as adrenaline, preparing us for action.

Both emotions can cause:

❤️ A faster heartbeat

📈 Increased blood pressure

💦 Sweaty palms

💨 Faster breathing

🦋 Butterflies in your stomach

⚡ Heightened alertness

Interestingly, the physical sensations can be almost identical.

The important difference is how our brain interprets what's happening.

🔄 CHANGE THE STORY YOU TELL YOURSELF

Imagine sitting in the car, waiting for your driving examiner.

You notice your heart beating faster.

You could think:

😰 "I'm so nervous! What if I fail? What if I make a mistake?"

OR you could tell yourself:

🤩 "I'm excited! I've worked hard for this, and now I get to show what I've learned!"

Your body hasn't changed, but the meaning you're giving those sensations has.

Psychologists call this anxiety reappraisal.

Research suggests that interpreting nervous energy as excitement can improve performance in challenging situations.

It doesn't magically remove nerves, but it can help you work with them rather than fight against them.

🎯 TRY THIS BEFORE YOUR DRIVING TEST

When you feel those butterflies, don't immediately try to get rid of them.

Instead, remind yourself:

💚 "This is excitement. My body is getting ready to do something important."

🌬️ Take a few gentle breaths.

😌 Relax your shoulders.

🚗 Focus on one thing at a time.

And remember:

You don't need to drive perfectly. You need to demonstrate that you can drive safely and independently.

🌟 ONE FINAL THOUGHT

Feeling nervous before your driving test doesn't mean you're not ready.

It means the result matters to you.

So next time your heart starts racing before your test, try replacing:

❌ "I'm scared!"

with

✅ "I'm excited!"

You might be surprised how much difference that small change in perspective can make.
