On 1 September 1985, Stefan Bellof lost his life during the 1000 Kilometres of Spa. He was 27. Near the three-hour mark, his Porsche collided with Jacky Ickx’s works car at Eau Rouge as they fought for second place. Organisers later stopped the race as a mark of respect.
Bellof’s brief Formula 1 career was spent with Tyrrell. Its defining performance came in the rain at Monaco in 1984. Starting 20th and last in a normally aspirated Tyrrell, Bellof reached third on the road before the race was stopped. Tyrrell was later excluded from the 1984 championship and all its results were annulled, but the drive remains one of the clearest demonstrations of his ability.
In sports cars, Bellof had already reached the top. With Porsche, he won the drivers’ title in the 1984 World Endurance Championship. During qualifying for the 1983 Nürburgring 1000 Kilometres, he lapped the Nordschleife in 6:11.13, averaging more than 200 km/h. The outright lap record stood for 35 years, until Timo Bernhard broke it in a Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo in 2018.
Forty-one years after Spa, Bellof’s place in racing history is secure. A world title, the Nordschleife benchmark and the drive at Monaco show how much he achieved within a remarkably short career. Today, we remember Stefan Bellof.
