In the 60s and 70s, Norton opted for a rather flashy color palette, probably with the idea of attracting a younger clientele. With the hindsight of the years, some colors may seem more or less tacky today. One can stick to the classic 'black with gold stripes,' but there are enthusiasts for the entire range of colors: from 'Candy Apple Red' to 'Fire Flake Roman Purple.' And that's great !

For this beautiful Commando from a Nortonist in Portugal, we are not sure if the beautiful orange color is really an original color.
Would it be the original « Solid tangerine » ? What do you think?

Dans les années 60 et 70, Norton a opté pour une palette de couleurs plutôt flashy probablement dans l’idée de séduire une clientèle plus jeune.
Avec le recul des années, certaines couleurs peuvent paraitre plus ou moins ringardes aujourd’hui. On peut s’en tenir au classique « noir avec filets dorés » mais il y a des amateurs pour toute la gamme de couleurs : du « Candy Apple Red » au « Fire Flake Roman Purple».
Et c’est bien ainsi.

Pour cette jolie Commando d’un Nortoniste portugais, nous ne sommes pas sûrs que la belle couleur orange soit vraiment une couleur d’origine, le "Solid tangerine". Qu’en pensez vous ?

✅the make, model and year of manufacture of your motorcycle
✅the Alton product in question (generators, Norton starter kits, Velocette, Comet
✅the serial number of your Alton product
✅the date of purchase (the year, at least)
✅if possible the mileage (actual age) of the part in use

With these elements, the topic will be processed more quickly and efficiently.
In most cases, problems can be solved remotely.

👉On starter kits for Velocettes : the serial number is engraved on the main steady plate (on a small stainless steel number plate on recent units)
👉On starter kits for Norton Commandos : the serial number is engraved near the earth cable connector screw (on a small stainless steel number plate on recent units). Not easy to read when the kit is in place
👉On starter kits for Vincent Comets : the serial number is engraved at the bottom of the inner case casting.

👉Sur les kits démarreurs pour Norton : le numéro de série est gravé près de la vis du cable de masse (sur une plaque en acier inox pour les modèles plus récents). Pas très accessible quand le kit est sur la moto.
👉Sur les kits démarreurs pour Vincent Comet : le numéro de série est gravé au bas du carter de transmission primaire.

We created the Alton permanent magnet A.-C. generators to replace the 3-inch dynamos of classic British motorcycles.
It's a story that began about 25 years ago.
In retrospect, we can distinguish 5 generations of Alton generators.
They are quite similar externally, but they are very different internally.💡

-1st generation 1996 to 1998: some kind of pre-series units. Early prototypes were Kubota based.

-2nd generation 1999 to 2004: big ferrite magnets, planetary gear, firstly with steel bodies and later units with alloy bodies.

-3rd generation 2004 to 2006: multiplication gears, triphased with neodymium magnets replacing the ferrite magnets.

-4th generation 2006 to 2008: multiplication gears, back to single phased technology with « new » neodymium magnets.

-The major design breakthrough came in 2008. This is the 5th generation, fully redesigned, direct drive, no gears inside. This design remains unchanged until nowadays with some minor design modifications only.

Broadly speaking, it is still the design used today with only a few small detail modifications made year after year. We have manufactured 5 times more generators of this 5th generation than generators of all previous generations combined.👍😉

Nous avons créé les générateurs Alton pour remplacer les dynamos 3 pouces des motos classiques britanniques. C’est une histoire qui a commencé il y a environ 25 ans. Avec le recul, on peut distinguer 5 générations de générateurs. Ils sont assez semblables extérieurement mais ils sont très différents intérieurement. 💡

-1e génération : des prototypes à base d’alternateurs Kubota puis des pré-séries avec des alternateurs « maison".

-2e génération : générateurs à aimants ferritiques, engrenages internes, corps acier puis aluminium;

-3e génération : générateurs à aimants néodymes, triphasés.

-4e génération : générateurs à aimants néodymes, monophasés.

-Le tournant majeur de conception est arrivé en 2008 avec nos générateurs sans engrenage interne.
C’est la 5e génération. Entièrement repensé, entraînement direct, sans engrenages internes.
Dans les grandes lignes, c’est toujours le design utilisé aujourd’hui avec seulement quelques petites modifications de détails apportées d’année en année.

Nous avons fabriqué 5 fois plus de générateurs de cette 5e génération que de générateurs de toutes les générations précédentes.👍😉

Impromptu visit🙂

On Thursday, the 11th of July, we had some visitors from abroad : Richard, Paul, and Peter from Kent, UK, arriving on their highly modified Vincents. ✨

Here is Richard's answer when we asked about the mileage of each Vincent :

🔥"It is of course hard to put an accurate mileage on a 73 years old bike as many things get changed over the years but to demonstrate how these have been used it may be better to identify where they have been with their current owners. Paul has been to America, Canada, Spain ,Holland, Austria, France, Belgium and Germany of course, the Isle of Man and Scotland. Peter has been to Holland, Spain and France and the Isle of Man and I have been to Holland, Spain, Austria, Germany and France and the Isle of Man. All have in excess of 75000 miles showing on the speedometers. Both Peter and I have had Altons throughout and Paul has certainly had his fitted for more than 10 years."🔥

The Alton team was very proud and honored to see these 3 long-distance tourers equipped with Alton generators.
Paul’s Vin needed some fresh air from Brittany to go back home safely.
It was quite nice to meet you, gentlemen.
Thank you for your visit.

🔥This lovely HRD Vincent Série B is probably one of the very first Rapide imported in France after WW2.
Parisian Clément Garreau imported the HRD and Vincent motorcycles before and after WW2.

This picture was taken in front of C. Garreau’s garage by photographer-pilot André Nebout
Some details are typical of an early B.
