Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin is ramping up its locally produced 4680 battery cells, with production starting in May 2026 and planned capacity now expanding from 8 GWh to 18 GWh through an additional $250 million investment. The operation includes can stamping for precise cylindrical cell manufacturing and Tesla’s Dry Battery Electrode process, which can significantly reduce energy use and factory footprint. The expanded line could eventually supply batteries for around 240,000 Model Y vehicles annually while reducing reliance on imported cells. With more than 1,500 positions being recruited and full-scale production targeted for the first half of 2027, Berlin could become an important piece of Tesla’s 4680 battery strategy.
