Brake linings apply pressure to the drum creating the friction needed to slow or stop your vehicle.
In this setup the slave cylinder push the brake linings grabbing the drum which is directly connected to the wheel hence slow or stop your vehicle.
When the linings are excessively worn,exposed metal on the linings grinds against the rotor every time you brake, producing a grinding noise and likely damage the drum.
