A major step forward for animal protection just happened in Nassau County. 🐕❤️
On April 27, 2026, County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed one of the strongest local anti-tethering laws in the United States — creating stricter protections for dogs left chained outside for long periods of time.
Under the new law:
🐾 Dogs cannot be tethered outdoors for more than one hour within any 12-hour period
🐾 Overnight tethering between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. is prohibited
🐾 Dogs cannot be left outside during dangerous weather conditions, including extreme heat or freezing temperatures
🐾 Additional protections apply to puppies, pregnant dogs, elderly dogs, and sick animals
Violators could face:
⚖️ Up to one year in jail
⚖️ Fines reaching $1,000
⚖️ Possible loss of custody of the animal
Animal welfare advocates praised the legislation, pointing out that rescue organizations and investigators regularly receive reports involving dogs left chained outside without proper shelter, food, or water.
Supporters say the law sends a powerful message:
Dogs are not backyard decorations.
They are living beings who deserve safety, care, and protection. ❤️
For many animal lovers, this represents more than a policy change.
It reflects a growing belief that communities should no longer tolerate neglect disguised as ownership.
And many hope laws like this eventually become the standard everywhere.
