Finally got around to doing a sound check after fitting the primary cat delete to our Vantage demo car. 🔊

Why remove the primary cats instead of the secondary cats?

The primary catalysts retain a huge amount of heat in the engine bay. On a car where the cooling system is already working close to its limits, reducing under-bonnet temperatures is a major advantage for track use and helps keep temperatures under control during longer sessions.

Next on the list is a set of high-flow Euro 6+ secondary catalysts. The aim is to remain emissions compliant while maximising exhaust flow, performance and sound.!

Contrary to popular belief, Aston Martin engines are generally extremely durable. However, we're seeing an increasing number of 4.7-litre V8 engines suffering relatively premature connecting rod bearing wear.

Interestingly, it doesn't appear to correlate with age, mileage or maintenance history, and in many cases there is very little warning before a major failure occurs.

Fortunately, this owner identified the issue early enough for us to intervene before catastrophic damage was done. The engine can now be rebuilt with improved components, making it stronger and more resilient for the future.

Each year we also carry out a number of preventative engine rebuilds, upgrading the rod bearings and refreshing other critical wear components. For owners looking for even more, we can also build these engines to GT4 specification and beyond.

This very low mileage and very well looked after Aston Martin early DBS was in for a routine inspection, when it was noticed that the bobbins on the back of the discs were missing in multiple places.

This is caused by corrosion on the bobbins, unfortunately this also caused the bobbins to expand and crack the discs.

A full disc and pad replacement for these cars is upward of €25000 so be sure to check for this when buying your next car with carbon brakes!

Are there cheaper options? Yes, both aftermarket carbon brakes and steel replacements, however in the interest of originality and legality (with German TÜV) the customer chose to stay with original Aston Martin parts supplied by us.

Unfortunately it's not clear exactly what causes this water ingress and corrosion to occur but we will for sure be doing some research into the causes and more importantly the prevention.

Disclaimer! The disc in the cover photo did not shatter during use, however it did crack significantly easier than expected during the normal disc removal process with the point of fracture propagating from the cracks at the bobbins, which begs the question - could continued use of a disc cracked by the bobbins suffer a catastrophic failure in heavy use!?
