The BMW GT4 oil story is an interesting one.
During the F series era, BMW recommended a richer formulation than what was broadly available for its road going counterpart. Today’s GT4 handbook, however, specifies a conventional LL-04 C3-spec motor oil, an interesting change.
Both 5W-30 and 5W-40 can carry LL-04 approval, yet our experience shows the S58 also performs exceptionally well on A3/B4 LL-01 formulations up to a 5W-50. We’ve seen these oils perform flawlessly under demanding track conditions and while setting records, including last year’s G87 record lap by .
So, what does this mean for our recommendations?
For stock engines, manufacturer specification remains the baseline, making LL-04 spec an appropriate choice. It is still too early to draw long term conclusions about rod bearing and camshaft wear with modern efficiency oriented formulations, but these will become increasingly relevant as the platform ages. For built engines, aftermarket camshafts and serious track use, the S58 continues to respond extremely well to robust A3/B4 formulations, just as we’ve seen with E and F chassis engines.
This is exactly what we’re researching with our C3 range, benchmarking these newer LL-04 formulations directly against our ultra strong A3/B4 products to quantify any measurable difference in wear over time. Our testing and experience already shows that higher ZDDP blends do not inherently increase heat or any LSPI events when factors such as calcium are kept within appropriate limits.
Our soon to be announced C3 range will be the strongest in the world, pushing 15% ester content, far above market average.
Ultimately, the question is long-term shear strength and wear for us, not simply what is written on the specification sheet. That’s what we’ll be quantifying over the coming years.
