repairing vs replacing
..not only are brandnew porsche engines (or engine cases) mighty expensive, also they have received absolutely ZERO improvements on their weakest link - the cylinders. Why would you go that way?

Replacing the cylinders with something "proper" by people who have been doing just THIS for decades is a more economic way that will give you -and maybe your grandkids- longer lasting fun with your Porsche. Matching numbers and all. Worry-free.

Building a business is tough.
Building it all alone is a challenge.
Building it in Germany is almost pathetic. You pay over 50% in taxes and fees. You get ZERO govt or union support, it's a complete oneway street. You pay the highest energy prices. You pay the highest raw iron prices. Worldwide.

You are your own master. Wrenching. Taxes. Logistics. Customer support. Test driver. Sweeping the floor. Innovator. Caterer. Hotline. Secretary.
..but there was NO WAY some other dude was gonna tell me when to eat lunch for the next 20 years.

Fantastic experience with Porsche in Germany!
On a trip to the Nurburgring at Pentecost I had a problem with my 996. It started to misfire after a few laps, and the engine light came on. I had brought diagnostic tools, and a misfire message came up. Good advice was expensive since it was Pentecost evening. An email to Werksmotor Porsche Motoreninstandsetzung in Kiel where I left my phone number was one of the ideas I got. The car was running even though it misfired, so the course was set north. Then the phone rang, and it was Jarno from Werksmotor who called. A very nice man who was very interested in the matter. The problem was that it was 650 kilometers up to Kiel.
We agreed that I would try to get there, so he offered to take a look at the car. The car misfired all the way to Kiel during Saturday, and a text message to Jarno confirmed that he would look at the car on Sunday morning, Pentecost.
There I met an unusually nice and accommodating Jarno who was ready with a computer upon arrival. He went over the entire engine and checked everything that could be wrong. Inspected the cylinders for bore score. Replaced the crank sensor without any help. Then he found a spark plug on cylinder no. 2 that was broken. Then replaced all the plugs and the multi-belt, and the car ran like clockwork again. All this within 2 hours on a Sunday morning! I can only recommend that anyone with problems contact Jarno. You will be looking for a good person like him for a long time!!!

If you thought, the „grease seals“ on your bearing will keep the oil OUT and the grease filling IN, think again.

In german, these „seals“ are called dustcaps, and i think that is way more accurate!

See for yourself, how much goo oil with all contamination has gone through the bearing and into the shaft as well.

We run all renewed bearings without the CAPS, no complaints or failures whatsoever.
And if they tell you, the bearings are not available for sale - drop us a line. We have all three in stock!

people on the internet are still saying, that putting in IRON cylinders in these motors is risky, prone to fail and difficult - despite us having the reputation, success rate and customer relations we have.

With a background of over 20 years in military aviation i happen to be pretty good at calculating (and avoiding unneccessary) risks and we have always liked a bit of a challenge. Turned out, our machining isn‘t all that bad either 😉

But re-using through re-coating or replacing entire cylinders with new aluminum would definetely be the LAST thing we‘d wanna try 😂

#996 and #986 engines use these actuators for the system.
The wear pads (top of the picture) are very small and have a tough job.. so they are wearing out after all those years. A good indication is when the timing of the cylinder banks is moving away from (ideally) ZERO deviation to any value near 10° deviation. At ten degrees, you WILL get a .

Get those values checked and recorded at your preferred specialist so you can keep track of where this is going in your car. Takes 5 minutes and no wrenching at all. Bring him a beer and say hi from !

Or, of course, you can just wait until the whole pad and half the actuator is rubbed away by the chain. Latest at THAT point, you WILL see your specialist. For a full rebuild.

Again, this plated alloy cylinder is a nice testimony, that it‘s more about the than about the material used for cylinder repairs. You can use the best metals from mars and venus, but if you cut your cylinders short by 0.5mm, there WILL be a bubblebath in your coolant tank.

Pick your engine shop wisely. Don‘t fall for the repetitive encores that they post on their commercial channels…

i always like my customer‘s feedback and it‘s great to see how i do manage to change their emotions towards their car after an engine failure or other problems have brought them down.
