New vs. used: why a new BMW can actually cost you less 💡
Thinking a used car is the “smart money” move? Here are a few tips from Patrick, after 6+ years helping the military community get into the right car:
1️⃣ Buy tax-free. With SOFA status, you skip sales tax on a new BMW or MINI. That alone can be thousands of dollars.
2️⃣ Stack the military discount. New cars come with military sales pricing, often well below MSRP. Used cars don’t.
3️⃣ Watch for model changeovers. When a new generation is coming, the outgoing model gets the biggest discounts. That’s where the real deals are.
4️⃣ Compare the loan, not just the price. Lenders usually offer lower rates on new cars than used ones, which can close the price gap fast.
5️⃣ Count the warranty. New means a full 4-year/50,000-mile BMW warranty plus 3 years/36,000 miles of included maintenance back in the States. A used car’s repairs come out of your pocket.
6️⃣ Think about PCS. A new U.S.-spec car is built to go home with you. No surprises with history, mileage or specs when it’s time to leave.
