Season speeding up, another win!

At Zandvoort during the second raceday of the season took his second wij of this year. But it did not come easy and without some luck.

During qualifying Maikel noticed 2 issues, a lack of grip turning left and a slipping clutch between 3rd and 4th gear. Luckily he still managed a 3rd place in qualifying and the team set to work to change the clutch.

With race 1 just 2hrs later and a car on just stands out was a race against the clock but the team managed with 20min to spare, just in time to go to the pre-grid.

With a good start and some early overtakes Maikel managed to take the lead of the race and held on until the final straight. With Liroy Stuart, who had helped keep the lead during the race, jumping out of the slipstream for a dash to the line and just cliching the win ahead of Maikel.
Race 1: P2 or not....

After the race there was a scrutineering check in which a number of cars where found to have an infringement with the regulations which meant Maikel got P1.

Race 2 was another close battle with Maikel still struggling with grid in the left turns at Zandvoort even though the team tried to resolve them.
Positions varied throughout the race between P1 and P4. To the line Maikel had a slipstream to claim P3 just ahead of Yannick Rehorst.
Race 2: P3 or not....

Again after the race some cars where found to have infringements with the regulations and Maikel moved up to P2.

Race 3 the team decided to use a different set of tires on the right-hand side of the car which improved the handling. A late in the race code 60 caused the field to bunch up and some wild action developed into the last laps. What looked like a P4 at the line became a P3 after penalties for track limits for winner Marcel Dekker with many drivers receiving penalties for speeding under code 60.

Overall result for the day P1!

BMW 188k with RacingDiffs internals for our BMW B48 Swapped Mazda MX-5 ND!
We are continuing where we left off with the last installment of our BMW B48 swap series. This time, we are taking the BMW 188k differential and are inserting the fully forged L*D unit. This should allow us to handle the increased horsepower and actually put it down on the road.

We prepare the diff by pressing new bearings on the L*D unit and install the crown wheel. Then we tighten the pinion wheel, followed by inserting the L*D unit. Next, we install the bearing shells. A tricky part in the install is positioning the L*D unit correct versus the pinion wheel. This is done by the C-Clips and measuring backlash. Then we insert side seals and exit flanges. Finally, we fill the diff up with Ravenol Racing Gear oil for maximum protection.

The stock Mazda diff is great for 180 hp… but doubling the torque with a BMW B48 engine is asking too much💥
In this video, we’re installing a BMW 188K differential into the MX-5 rear subframe. Our diff itself also needs upgrading. Our friends supplied a fully forged L*D unit to drop inside. This drop-in unit replaces the factory open carrier with a fully forged, clutch-type differential core that delivers maximum traction and race-grade reliability.

New parts day is always fun! This time we receive a much anticipated package from our friends at Tein. Our MX-5 with the BMW B48 engine swap has a lot more power than stock, and the Tein Super Racing Damper is a 3-way adjustable motorsport-grade damper that will help us keep the power in check.

We can adjust the rebound, but also the low speed and high speed compression separately. Additionally, the clever design allows for changing the ride height without changing the tension on the spring.

We are looking forward to installing these dampers and testing them on track. Full installation video and track tests coming up!

A great start to the season!

In the first raceday of the 2026 MaX5 cup Maikel Schilders takes the lead in the Championship for I.L. Motorsport.

A P3 during qualifying was a good position to start from for the first 3 races of the new season.

Race 1 turned out to be a 4 way battle after the field had settled after a few laps. Leading most of the laps Maikel took P1 on the line closely followed Marcel Dekker en Tim Martens.

Race 2 was again a close battle at the front but after some contact early on the race Maikel dropped back a bit and had to recover in the rest of the race. A red flag during the race which limited the time made the job harder, but at the finish Maikel took P3 just 0.1 behind race winner Marcel Dekker with Yannick Rehorst in P2.

Race 3 became a 3 way battle between Maikel, Marcel and Leon van Verseveld who had come back from the back of the field after an issue in race 1. Although positions did not change as much there wasn't any time part in the race where gaps exceeded 1 second.
Maikel took his second victory of the day and with the points gathered over the day that also meant P1 for the day.

Your engine swap will mess up the balance!
We dont think so. And here we explain why, using one of the most important accesories in car racing: tape!

We feel we got the best position for the BMW B48 engine in our MX-5 ND. The limiting factor here is the tilted angle of the BMW engine block, the MX-5 transmission tunnel and the ground clearance. A combination of these prevented us from an engine placement further back. Putting the B48 against the firewall would mean its about 10cm further back than the MX-5 engine. With the current placement, we expect to roughly maintain the OEM weight distribution. When all the parts are on the car, we’ll put it on the scales and know for sure.
