BMW Startup Garage is the leading Venture Client unit in the automotive industry. The BMW Startup Garage is the Venture Client unit of the BMW Group.

As a Venture Client, the BMW Group becomes a client of a startup, at an early stage when its product, service or technology is not yet mature. Participation into our program is a startup’s first step to succeed in the global, multi trillion dollar automotive industry. It consist of a no-strings-attached partnership to integrate and validate a startup’s product, service or technology as well as to

network entrepreneurs with top automotive engineers and managers. We are looking for startups with an innovative technology, product or service that can make a significant contribution to BMW Group vehicles, services, factories and systems.

When Embotech first demonstrated their product to BMW, it was not to our BMW Startup Garage team or one of the BMW engineers. No, it was at the top manager conference in the plant Leipzig. One of the 200 top managers in this crowd was none other than our CEO Oliver Zipse. Can you imagine a bigger stage to start your journey in the automotive industry?
The Swiss startup later became one of the key players that made Automated Driving in the Plant possible (link to their awesome success story in the comments).

We help our program startups by promoting them internally, and in case of a successful adoption also externally.

Last week, almost 200 BMW colleagues joined us onsite and virtually to meet 10 of our program startups. They presented their inspiring innovations from anti-reflection glass and intelligent fabric sensors to AI-based technologies like human-centered decision-making, audio, and video synthesis, and autonomous systems. From efficient robotic storage and passive cooling solutions for production and building management, all the way to emerging technologies like blockchain and NFT!

What did the startups get in return? Two fully-packed days with expert keynotes on the BMW organization, purchasing, R&D, IT, production, ..., as well as a tour through the Recycling & Disassembly Center and two alumni sessions, where we deep-dived into the success stories of AirConsole and Plan A. Additionally, the startups got to meet top management at a special VIP networking dinner.

That wraps up the 12th Deep Drive Days - and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to the startups for participating and of course to all our supporters: speakers, moderators, behind-the-scenes-helpers, tour guides, and of course our VIPs!

David Gutjahr joined us at the beginning of this year as our new startup lead for all production topics. With his background in the BMW IT department, he understands how to integrate new technologies into the existing BMW infrastructure. Now, he helps startups to achieve exactly that at the BMW plants.

Ladies first! Meet Melanie!

Jia-Yi Melanie Tang joined the world’s first Venture Client unit in early 2022, after years of experience in the BMW Group procurement department in Germany and China. So, she knows what startups can expect on their journey of becoming long-term suppliers for BMW and supports in facilitating this process. As the Startup Program & Partnership Manager, Melanie helps guide startups through this journey with all communications, events, and program-related projects.

In 2019, two startups joined our Venture Client program. Now, they enter the next phase of a never-been-done-before collaboration!

"We have proven before that startups can bring an enormous technological advantage to our products, services, and processes. With this success story of Seoul Robotics and Embotech working with the BMW Group on a strategically relevant project like "Automated Driving in the Plant", we have really taken it to the next level. It's always a risk working with a startup, let alone with two on one common project. So I am extremely proud that our Venture Client program provided the right framework to make this collaboration a huge success.", says Bernhard Schambeck, Head of the BMW Startup Garage.

Can you remote control vehicles that are not equipped with autonomous driving technology?

In its landmark project “Automated Driving in the Plant”, the team around Sascha Andree is making driverless manoeuvering of any BMW car within plant logistics possible. The BMW Group contracted South Korean startup Seoul Robotics and Swiss startup to create the technological base for this new, unique functionality.

Using the static sensors overlooking the driveable areas, Seoul Robotics’s lidar perception software recreates a digital twin of the environment, including object classification and position estimation for the vehicles. Meanwhile, Embotech’s motion planning software performs the steering, braking, acceleration, and parking for the driverless vehicles with real-time trajectory generation. The functionality will be tested in a real production environment at the plant Dingolfing as of July 2022.

We came together for a 2-day workshop to welcome new team members and finetune our Venture Client program! Outside the daily work and in the middle of the gorgeous Bavarian Alpes, we reviewed our learnings of the past years and developed new opportunities for startups at the BMW Group. And we strengthened our team spirit!

"How can I help you?” Speech-based interactions are becoming more important in the driving experience. To develop safe and user-friendly voice applications, the BMW Group needs to be able to design and test voice dialogs in a fast and easy way.

Thankfully, there is a startup for almost everything. In this case: Voiceflow. The Canadian company adapted its platform for rapid prototyping of complex and experienceable voice applications to the automotive environment. They did this during their pilot project with BMW UX/UI designers Florian Roider and Florian Weber in 2020.

Wishing you peace and joy this holiday season!

The year is ending, the days get quieter, it's the time to rest and reflect. The BMW Startup Garage looks back on the eventful year of 2021:

- we launched an Open Call for sustainability solutions and showcased the top startups at the IAA Mobility in Munich.
- 5 new startup leads joined our international team.
- the 128th startup officially entered our Venture Client program.
- and we continued to generate impact for the entire BMW Group
with the adoption of startup technologies.

We will build on this success next year. But for now, we say THANK YOU to our amazing team, to our partners and supporters, and especially to all the startups out there, innovating, pivoting, and creating important solutions for the world! See you all in 2022!
