The reality of offshore racing: it’s not just about the speed, it’s about how you handle the unexpected.

The AEGEAN 600 has been a demanding reality check for the Nireas Sailing team. We encountered a serious failure with the mainsail - the straps tore off - which forced us to switch to the storm sail. We spent significant time on repairs and only managed to get the mainsail back up yesterday evening.

For most of our crew, this is the very first time facing a race of this caliber. Managing these conditions, combined with technical setbacks, has been a steep learning curve for everyone on board. Captain Maciej Górecki is working hard to guide the team through these challenges as we continue to navigate our way forward.

24 hours into the AEGEAN 600 and Nireas is holding steady! ⛵️

The start was exactly as forecast, with the strong Meltemi winds we expected. As we aren't a dedicated heavy-weather vessel, the conditions were challenging, and we faced some early setbacks, including the loss of our headsail. However, the team learned quickly under our Captain’s guidance and had a fantastic night, hitting speeds over 16 knots even with a conservative sail plan.

With gusts now reaching 20-30 knots, we’re prioritizing safety and holding off on the gennaker. For a crew doing this for the first time, we
couldn't be prouder of their focus and grit. 200 miles down - many more to go!

The wait is finally over! ⛵️

The Nireas Sailing team is officially ready to take on the Aegean 600. We have left the Olympic Marina and our journey begins now. The anticipation is building as we head toward the starting line!
