Tesla has moved to a dynamic pricing model for its robotaxi service in Austin, which launched on June 22, 2025 . As of late July 2025, the fare structure is approximately a $1 base fare plus $1 per mile . This is a shift from the initial flat-rate pricing. When the service first debuted, all rides were priced at a flat fee of $4.20 . This was later increased to $6.90 as the service expanded its geofenced operational area in Austin . The move to a per-mile cost aligns the robotaxi service more closely with traditional ride-hailing platforms . The service in Austin began as a limited pilot with a small fleet of 10 to 20 vehicles and initially included a safety monitor in the front passenger seat .

Some Tesla engineers were not enthusiastic about Elon Musk’s Cybertruck design, according to the automaker’s design chief, Franz von Holzhausen.

“A majority of the people in this studio hated it,” von Holzhausen said of the futuristic design, according to the book. “They were like, ‘You can’t be serious.’ They didn’t want to have anything to do with it. It was just too weird.”

Many within the studio disliked the futuristic design, even designing an alternative version of the electric pickup. Elon Musk, however, was less open to feedback, saying, “I don’t do focus groups.”

Despite concerns, von Holzhausen and his team worked tirelessly to deliver a drivable version for a Tesla event in November 2019, and the Cybertruck has since garnered attention, with some debating its unconventional design.
