🐋 Humpback Whale Migration Season in Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Every year, from July/August through October, humpback whales from the Southern Hemisphere make an extraordinary journey from the cold, food-rich waters near Antarctica and southern South America to the warm tropical waters of Costa Rica. Some travel more than 8,000 km to reach our Pacific coast, one of the longest mammal migrations on Earth.
But why travel so far? 💙
Costa Rica’s warm, protected Pacific waters provide an important environment for the whales’ reproductive cycle. During this phase of their migration, females come to give birth and nurse their calves, while other adults arrive for mating and breeding. Mothers and newborn calves may remain closer to the coast, where calmer waters provide a place for the young whales to grow stronger before beginning the long journey back south.
It’s an incredible time to be on the Pacific Ocean. You may witness a whale breaching, a powerful tail disappearing beneath the surface, or even a mother traveling alongside her calf. 🐋✨
