🚑🚓 One of the most confusing moments for visitors driving in Costa Rica…

You’re driving along, minding your own business, when you spot flashing red lights in your mirror.

Your brain immediately goes: “Emergency! Pull over!”

So you do the right thing. You slow down, move over, and make space…

…only to watch three cars behind you think, “Pura Vida does exist! Free overtaking lane!” 😅

By the time you realise the ambulance (or police car) isn’t actually trying to get past you, you’re sitting on the shoulder wondering how you’ve gone from Good Samaritan to the back of the queue 🤔

Welcome to one of Costa Rica’s little driving quirks 🇨🇷!

Here, it’s very common to see emergency vehicles driving with their lights ON but their sirens OFF. In many cases they’re simply making themselves more visible, patrolling, or travelling between locations. They’re not necessarily asking traffic to pull over.

When they switch on the siren as well, that’s a different story. That’s when everyone should safely move the pura Vida over.

It catches a lot of visitors out because, in many countries, flashing lights almost always mean “ move over *now* ” Here, doing exactly what you’ve been taught can sometimes earn you nothing more than a front-row seat as everyone else sneaks past! 🤦🏻‍♀️

The trick is not to panic. Keep an eye on what the emergency vehicle is actually doing, stay predictable, and if they really need the road, you’ll know soon enough.

Have you ever politely moved over… only to spend the next five minutes trying to merge back into traffic while everyone else happily carried on? 😂

If you’ve driven in Costa Rica and a convoy of cars just overtook you as soon as the road straightened out, you already know exactly what happened.

A recta happened.

Only in Costa Rica can a straight piece of road become a landmark.

“200 metres after the bridge…”
“Past the palo de mango…”
“When you get to la recta…”

Think about that for a second.

If people are using the straight bit of a road as the landmark… that tells you everything you need to know about the rest of the road 😂

Curves, more curves and a few extra curves just because. Then one more curve to keep you on your toes

Apparently the longest recta in Costa Rica is around 11 km long, and when photos of it started circulating online, people reacted like someone had discovered the eighth wonder of the world. “Qué belleza!”

That’s not a road! That’s an all-you-can-eat overtaking buffet.

Meanwhile, people from Saskatchewan were wondering what all the excitement was about

But here’s the part that makes me laugh…

Costa Rican drivers don’t ‘accidentally’ speed up on a recta, they’ve been waiting for it, they know it’s coming, it’s a build up

They’ve spent the last fifteen minutes tucked in behind you through every bend, every hairpin, every truck, every “despacito” avoiding potholes

Then, like a lion spotting a gazelle…

“Ahí viene la recta…”

The engine note changes.

The body leans forward, they gear down and somehow they find an extra 40 horsepower that wasn’t available five seconds ago.

And before you’ve even realised that the road has straightened out…

One after another…

A Hilux
Two motorcycles

And an old Yaris that suddenly identifies as a Ferrari 🏎️

Even the little Chevy spark you’ve been following all morning suddenly develops the confidence of a rally car

The funny part is that nobody planned this, it’s instinctual

The recta appears…

…and the entire line of traffic collectively decides that this is what the manufacturer made these cars for.

It’s not just anticipated rectas, an unexpected straight section of road releases a primal instinct in Costa Rican drivers: to see how fast they can get from current speed to top speed before the next curve.

And if you’ve been long enough, I guarantee you’ve done one of two things:

You’ve either watched an entire convoy blast past you…

…or you’ve been proudly leading the convoy.

Either way, the moment you see a recta, something deep inside every Costa Rican driver quietly whispers…

What happened yesterday was unacceptable and I want to say something about it

☠️The Death of Customer Service (And Why We Deserve It)

Everyone's frustrated. You call a company when you need help, and instead of a human being you get a robot asking you to press 1 for English and 4 for "none of the above." You navigate a phone tree the size of a rainforest and never once speak to an actual person. You send an email and get an auto-reply that answers a question you didn't ask. And somewhere in the middle of all this, you find yourself shouting "FFS!!!" into your phone like it's going to change anything.

I get it, it’s annoying.

But here's what nobody wants to say out loud: ❗️we did this to ourselves❗️

Customer service isn't dying because companies suddenly stopped caring about their customers. It's dying because customers made it an unlivable, unprofitable profession.

Think about what a customer service rep's day actually looks like. They clock in, put on their headset, and spend eight hours absorbing other people's worst moments. They get yelled at, insulted. They get threatened with bad reviews, with social media callouts, with "I'm going to make sure you lose your job." They sit there and take it because they're not allowed to hang up, not allowed to push back, not allowed to say what any reasonable human being would say in that situation. They have to smile through the phone while someone on the other end treats them like they personally engineered whatever inconvenience they're upset about.

And then they quit. Of course they do!

Companies train a team, watch them burn out and walk out, train another team, and repeat the cycle until someone in finance runs the numbers and realises it's cheaper to build a chatbot. That's not a conspiracy, that’s math 🤷‍♀️

So when you're frustrated that you can't reach a human, ask yourself what kind of environment did we create for those humans that there are none willing to take your call right now?

Now here's the part that I really want to bring to your attention because it’s not too late..

If you are lucky enough to reach a real person, a real voice on the phone, a real human typing back to you, a real person standing in front of you.. treat them like one. Be clear. Be patient. Say thank you. Let them know they helped you. That interaction? That's a data point. That's a reason for a company to keep investing in people instead of replacing them.

Every time a customer is kind, reasonable, and easy to work with, they are quietly making the case for human customer service to survive.

Every time someone screams, threatens, and weaponises a review over an unrealistic expectation they're writing the obituary

Customer service as we knew it is on life support. Whether it comes back depends entirely on whether we can remember that the person on the other end of the line is just that ..a person. Not a punching bag. Not a magician. A person doing a job, trying to help, who deserves the same basic decency we'd want for ourselves

Don’t be an Amanda.. be the customer that makes another human glad they showed up for work today.

Last point:
Anyone who has ever dealt with me knows that each time you reach out, it’s a human on the other end. When you get your car, there’s a human.. when you send a text to ask about absolutely anything.. there’s a human. And I’d like to pride myself on offering that personal touch and that means that rudeness, threats and condescending behaviour is not welcome

🎺 A Field Guide to the Costa Rican Horn 🇨🇷

Not all honks are created equal. After enough time on these roads, you start to realise the car horn here is less a safety device and more a social operating system. Let me break it down…

🎺The Quick Double-Tap

This is “hey, hi! Pura Vida!” Could be your neighbour, your cousin, the guy who fixed your tyre in 2019. Usually exchanged between taxi drivers, bus drivers or truckers from the same company. There’s always an echo.. if not from the horn it’s a shout from the window or the street

Or even more importantly, it’s ’hey, I’m coming up behind you, watch out’. Usually used by motorbikes who are exiting a speed portal connecting the 5th realm to land squarely in the microspace between two cars

🎺The Single Polite Beep

Usually means the light turned green 0.3 seconds ago and the car in front hasn’t moved yet. Not aggressive. Think of it as a gentle nudge from someone who has somewhere to be or empanadas to buy

Or even just an acknowledgement from a passing truck driver that there is a pretty girl on the street

🎺The Rapid-Fire Succession

Woohoo! Celebration! Someone just got married, scored a goal, or found parking in San José on a Saturday. Join in if you feel moved.

🎺The Long, Sustained Lean 😬

This one has consequences. Everyone knows what it means, and the person on the receiving end knows too and they have feelings about it. Strong feelings. Feelings that tend to exit the vehicle via the window at high speed on the end of an outstretched arm. You wanted acknowledgment, you got it. Just maybe not the kind you were hoping for yet the one you were expecting

🎺Honking at the guy with chips and drinks

Usually a double tap coupled with an arm out the window. He knows what to listen out for, other drivers are aware and don’t react unless they’re helping the vendor identify where it comes from

The unwritten rule that holds it all together is that the horn is expressive, not aggressive. If someone cuts you off, that’s just Tuesday. You don’t honk about Tuesday. You honk because you haven’t seen your third-grade classmate since 2008 and he’s standing right there

So if you’re visiting and someone honks at you, relax! You just got welcomed into the symphony 🎶

🚗💫 Mercury Is in Retrograde but our Fleet Is Not!

Mercury has already reared it’s head this year and has caused its usual chaos

Communications scrambled. Technology misbehaving. GPS sending people into rivers.

Our cars? Maintained, inspected, and completely unbothered by planetary drama.

And it’s coming again for around 3 weeks during the summer holidays.. be warned! Planning a vacation during mercury retrograde takes a special kind of superstitious planner to make sure that anything that can go wrong has been completely planned for

📆July 18 – August 11 in Leo, known for inserting unpredictability into travel plans. Expect hotel reservations to get mixed up, GPS to get its wires (roads) crossed as well as abuse every opportunity at miscommunication and misunderstanding

Tourist Tip #7: The left lane is actually NOT the fast lane in Costa Rica 😲

This catches a lot of visitors out.

In most countries, if you come flying up behind someone in the left lane, they’ll usually move over.

Not here…

They’re staying exactly where they are 🤷‍♀️

Because the left lane is the only lane on the road with a permanent contract. The right lane is pretty much freelancing. It disappears, turns into a bus stop, becomes a turning lane, or simply decides it’s had enough for the day and adios!

Nobody wants to move over, to just get stuck behind a bus doing 7km/h, and then spend the next kilometre negotiating their way back into the left lane

So if you’re flashing your headlights and making eye contact with them in their rear view mirror expecting the seas to partt… you’ll be disappointed.

The real Costa Rican passing lane is not so much a lane as it is a gap.

Within a couple of hours of hitting the road you’ll stop waiting for people to move over and start thinking like a tico: “GO quick… there’s a gap!”

And you got to slip into it before anyone knows your plan..

Reverse Psychology (Costa Rican Edition)

You guys ever been to Costa Rica? Unbelievable country. Absolutely beautiful. But here the driving culture will blow your mind.

There is this obsession, this national mandate, if you will, where you are culturally obligated to reverse park into every single space. Every single one. It doesn’t matter if it’s a massive supermarket chain parking area or a gravel ditch next to a fruit stand. You simply must back it in.

There are signs everywhere: “estacionar en posición de salida.” It’s not a recommendation. It’s a (non-)compulsory rule that is religiously followed.

Okay, so it’s not everywhere. In big parking lots like at PriceMart and Walmart, rebels will park nose-first all over the place. But looking around the parking lot, you’ll still find way more reverse-parked cars than you would in almost any other country. 🚗

But if you’re in a private parking lot in the middle of Alajuela or San José and you don’t park in posición de salida, before you’ve even turned off your vehicle, there’s a frantic gentleman signaling you to reverse into your spot. He’s using hand signals like he knows the NATO phonetic alphabet, and when you stare at him blankly, the panic reaches an all-time high as he starts making sweeping motions with both arms from the shoulder, directing your attention to the sign that clearly says: estacionar en posición de salida.

With how common this is, you’d think there must have been some historical event that triggered this level of caution, because there is no other explanation. Yet there’s no record of such an event!

They say it’s all about quick evacuation, but I think it’s just about making sure there’s slightly less chaos when everybody leaves the stadium at the same time.

Sometimes literally a stand, other times it’s being sold off the back of a truck, or sometimes it’s vendors wandering fearlessly between cars selling plantain chips, ice cold water and nuts 🥜

Wildlife & even domesticated animals

Going slow in Costa Rica isn’t just about steep hills and winding mountain roads. It’s also about watching out for squirrels, sloths or iguanas

Dogs, cats and every once in a while (I’m assuming) a rabbit will be lying in the street, basking in the sun or casually crossing to the other side. it’s common for animals to roam freely In rural areas, which you’ll pass through plenty of when driving from destination to destination. Take it easy and slow down.

There’s something innocent and wonderful about a herd of cows crossing or just standing in the middle of the road. Nowhere to go, nowhere to be, wondering what you’re doing there anyway.
