The trailer can also be part of the electric powertrain.
Electrified trailers are being explored as a way to add electric drive, energy recovery, and auxiliary power to semi-trailer trucks.
An electric trailer can use an e-axle and battery system to provide additional traction and recover braking energy. With coordinated control between the tractor and trailer, the system can also help with:
• Improved traction under heavy-load conditions
• Additional regenerative braking
• Reduced fuel or energy consumption
• Power supply for refrigeration and other auxiliary equipment
• Better stability and control of the tractor-trailer combination
The engineering challenge is not simply adding a motor and battery to the trailer. Tractor–trailer control, electrical architecture, weight distribution, and payload all need to be considered together.
Our electrified trailer solution integrates the e-axle, controller, and battery system, with hardware and software developed around the complete vehicle combination.
