🚗 Important news for learners across Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire: DVSA driving test swap rules have changed.

From 1 October 2026, learners no longer need to be available at the same time. Learner one phones DVSA to request the swap, then learner two phones separately to confirm it on the same working day. Swaps are by phone only, not online, email or webchat.

Both learners must:
✅ Have a car test booked
✅ Swap the exact same date, time and centre
✅ Have at least one of their two changes remaining
✅ Request it at least 10 full working days before the earliest test
✅ Match test types and fees
✅ Meet DVSA centre rules, including nearest-centre limits

Only you can book, change, swap or cancel your own test. Instructors, schools and third parties must not do it for you. DVSA has cancelled more than 1,300 tests and is restricting unofficial booking access.

You get a maximum of two changes, so speak to your instructor before booking. Local waits remain long: around 21 weeks at Anniesland, 16 weeks at Shieldhall and 18 weeks at Baillieston in August.

Thinking about becoming a driving instructor in Glasgow? 🚗 Our blog offers an honest, encouraging 2026 reality check, without the hype.

Most UK instructors are self-employed. More than half charge £36–£40 an hour. Full-time gross is realistically £35,000–£55,000 before costs and tax, with take-home often £22,000–£35,000. Some earn less while building up, and some more once established.

Gross is not take-home, and you are not paid for every working hour. Six lessons at £38 bring £228 gross. After £35 fuel and vehicle costs, £30 insurance and finance, £20 business costs, and £35 tax and NI, roughly £108 remains before household costs. Travel between pupils, progress notes, cleaning, planning and bookings take time too.

The local market across Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and surrounding towns includes city, motorway, rural, manual and automatic lessons. Test centres include Anniesland, Shieldhall, Baillieston, Bishopbriggs and East Kilbride. Instructor job adverts are up around 58% year on year, but a new instructor will not instantly have a full diary.

Qualifying means three ADI tests: Part 1 theory and hazard perception, Part 2 driving ability and Part 3 teaching, taking several months to around a year. A PDI must follow rules on the trainee licence, supervision, insurance and display arrangements, and is not yet a fully qualified ADI. Allison supports Parts 1–3 with working-instructor mentoring.

The work offers flexibility and meaningful work, but income fluctuates and there are vehicle costs, admin, cancellations and responsibility. The blog explains the franchise-versus-independent choice too.

Parallel parking can feel like a miniature driving exam every time you spot an empty space 😅🚗 It brings together steering, clutch or accelerator control, observations, distance judgement, kerb awareness and keeping calm while other drivers wait.

The goal at first is safe control and good observations. Neatness comes with practice, so don’t put pressure on yourself to get it perfect straight away.

A calm routine:
✅ Choose a space long enough with good visibility.
✅ Check mirrors, signal and pull alongside with a safe gap.
✅ Select reverse and complete all observations before moving.
✅ Reverse at walking pace, steering towards the kerb.
✅ Straighten up, finish parallel and safely within the space.
✅ Complete full observations before moving away.

Slow is the key word. Walking pace gives you time to observe, adjust and stop. In a manual, use careful clutch control; in an automatic, use gentle brake control. Bay parking follows the same calm routine, although busy car parks bring extra hazards such as pedestrians and shopping trolleys.

On your driving test, you’ll complete one reversing exercise: parallel parking, bay parking, or pulling up on the right, reversing and rejoining traffic. You won’t be asked to do both parallel and bay parking in the same test, but prepare for any approved exercise. A small mistake doesn’t automatically end the test. How you respond matters.

Practise one skill at a time, use quiet commentary, and don’t rely too heavily on one reference point because cars and spaces vary. Driving test routes aren’t published, so transferable skills matter more than memorising a route.

Didn't get the Glasgow result you hoped for? Take a breath. You’re far from alone. The latest full-year DVSA car pass rate is around 48.7%. One test doesn’t define you; it simply shows us what to work on next. 🚗💛

Tests don’t always go to plan because of nerves, one difficult moment or an area that needs more consistency. Your DL25 is useful feedback, not a verdict. It records driving, serious and dangerous faults. Up to 15 driving faults can still be a pass if there are no serious or dangerous faults. Common areas include junction observation, mirrors when changing direction, moving off, road/lane position, manoeuvre control, and signs, signals and markings. 🚨

There’s a minimum 10-working-day wait before another test. Fees are £62 on weekdays or £75 in the evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays. You book it yourself through the official GOV.UK service.

In July 2026, median waits were 21.3 weeks at Anniesland, 18.3 at Baillieston, 16 at Bishopbriggs and 16.3 at Shieldhall. These are medians, not promises. Tests are released up to 24 weeks ahead, with 6am Monday slots. Cancellations may be earlier, but there’s no official waiting or cancellation list. Paisley, Hamilton, East Kilbride or Airdrie may be worth considering.

Try a gentle 2–4-week bounce-back: read your DL25 on days 1–2, target faults in week 1, then do mocks with minimal prompts and a calm debrief in week 2. Weeks 3–4 are about building consistency and managing nerves. Keep lessons regular. Before driving, arrive early, breathe slowly, use your normal routines, drive safely rather than impressively, and let small mistakes go. You’ve got this. 💪

What a day for two fantastic passes! 🎉🚗

On Wednesday 9 September, Christina passed her driving test at Hamilton in the morning, followed by Stacey passing at Baillieston in the early afternoon. Both of you did really well and have worked incredibly hard to get there. 👏

I’m properly proud of you both : fantastic result! It was a tight squeeze getting from Hamilton to Baillieston with only minutes to spare, but it was absolutely worth it. 😅💪

Towing in Scotland? Don’t let a small mistake turn into a proper wobble on the road! 🚗💨

Our new guide covers the common towing mistakes caravan owners, horsebox users and work-trailer drivers can make, including:

✅ Not checking the coupling and breakaway cable properly
✅ Poor loading or overloading
