Hi, my name is Richard and I'm fundraising to fulfill a dream that I will pass on to my children.
It was July 2, 1963. John F.Kennedy was President of the United States. My dad, a WWII Veteran that served on the first day of the D-Day landing in Normandy took me to buy a car. It was a beautiful, brand new Chrysler New Yorker that I myself was too young to drive. I cherished that car. Often washing it and just sitting in it to read and do school work. Eventually, it became the first car I would drive. In this car my family and I traveled to faraway places. It was so much of my learning experience! In the mid-1970s my dad gave up driving due to a vision problem, he later received cornea transplants but decided never to drive again. I just couldn't let that car go. It was a part of my history and my connection to my dad. I decided to keep the car although it took a large chunk of the small salary that I was receiving as a public school teacher.
During the 1980s my two sons were born but I continued to garage the car and take it out on weekends for a short spin. My sons drove the car and were so proud to tell my dad of their experiences.
My dad passed away in 1995. I still have the Chrysler that is a part of my family history.
I'm now retired and would like to get the car back into shape to pass it on to my children. This year, the car will turn 60 and still in my family! What a great memory of my dad. He was truly a representative of the Greatest Generation. A Cuban immigrant who came in the 1930s to live in the United States.
The Chrysler would be a memorial to my dad and be passed on to his loving grandsons.
• Currently the car needs some mechanical work and painting. The Gofundme will help me realize the dream of repairing the car and gifting my children with a memory of their grandfather.
