Installed the COBB SF Intake + Airbox on this 2012 STI last week.

The kit is designed to improve airflow into the turbo while using the factory snorkel to draw in cooler outside air and the airbox to help shield the intake from engine bay heat. This intake also allows you to enjoy the beloved bypass valve sounds without having to install an aftermarket valve.

The SF Intake is also engineered to maintain a stable MAF signal, helping provide consistent airflow measurement for the ECU.

As with any intake change, the ECU calibration needs to be appropriate for the installed hardware. With the tune completed, the induction sounds can be enjoyed with a little more of that beloved turbo soundtrack. 👌

Solving the root cause of an issue > deleting codes.

This unique 2012 STI came in for a custom ECU calibration, hoping that if the annoying codes it was throwing weren’t indicating something critically wrong, they could simply be deleted. But tuning is about so much more than dictating how a car behaves. Logging and understanding the data helps us see why a car isn’t performing as it should, or why it’s throwing codes at you.

Before touching the calibration, we established a baseline — compression, leakdown, and boost leak testing.

From there, we log and observe how the engine behaves under a variety of conditions. This time, the data and visual inspection turned up a few things worth correcting: only 1 of 2 SAI valves replaced, loose ignition coils, overtightened spark plugs, a missing TMIC-to-BPV gasket, and an O₂ b**g that needed to be added to the downpipe.

With the repairs made, COBB SF intake, airbox, and SAI delete installed, and calibration complete, we can feel confident sending this car out on the road knowing it pulls hard, sounds great, and is running healthy.

Now ‘Rosco’ is heading back to Alberta — hopefully with plenty of good roads ahead.

Last weekend was a pretty great day out on the skid pad. We decided to use the opportunity to test some… alternative tires.

Apparently, 15 inch “lawn mower” tires don’t have quite the same reinforcement you’d expect from a typical automotive tire. Who knew? Despite heating up surprisingly quickly, these things survived roughly 13 rounds (we lost count) before looking like this. And somehow, not a single one exploded during a drift run.

Clearly, more research is required. We’ll be heading back to Princess for additional research material.
