UPDATE: (Please share) We are happy to share some encouraging news regarding our ongoing efforts to enhance public safety in our community and beyond.

We’ve been informed that in support of our Council’s call to action, Manitoba’s Justice Minister, along with the Association of Manitoba Municipalities President, jointly reached out to the federal government, urging them to strengthen bail reform efforts. This is a crucial step in addressing the concerns we’ve all felt regarding repeat and violent offenders.

We also want to remind everyone that the province announced their five-point bail reform plan last fall. We will be closely monitoring these changes as we push to tackle the challenges posed by prolific offenders in our community.

Having support from our provincial leaders on this issue is a significant advancement. It demonstrates a united front in our call for change. Our city council will be reaching out to other municipalities and provinces, encouraging them to join us in this vital initiative.

We also know how powerful it is for our citizens to feel engaged in this important issue. Your participation in signing petitions shows that you care deeply about the safety and well-being of our communities. However, writing a personal letter to the federal Justice Minister can sometimes have an even greater impact. Sharing your own stories and experiences can help convey the urgency of our concerns.

If you’d like to make your voice heard, we encourage you to reach out directly to Minister Virani. You can send your letters to:

**The Honorable Arif Virani**
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada
284 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON K1A 0H8

Please feel free to copy us in your letters to [email protected]

Together, we can make a difference! Let’s keep the momentum going as we work towards safer communities for us all, and so that senseless tragedies like we’ve experienced, can end.

Thank you for your continued support!

Next time you are in the shop please take the time to sign the petition on behalf of Kellie Verwey and her family. The petition is to urge the Provincial Government to take immediate action on bail reform, and to lobby the Federal Government to repeal provisions of the Criminal Code that grants repeat offenders rights.
