Just a friendly reminder for winter conditions

🔹As of Thursday, Oct 1st, motorists required to use snow-rated tires for travel over Malahat and west of Sooke on Highway 14🔹

Motorists on highways 1 and 14 will soon be required to use snow-rated tires to travel north of Langford and west of Sooke, respectively.

Between October 1st and March 31, passenger vehicles are required to run tires with a "three peak mountain and snowflake" symbol identifying suitability for snowy conditions, and/or the "M+S" symbol identifying the tire's ability to handle mud and snow. Some tires have both the three peak symbol and the M+S symbol.

The tire requirement applies along Highway 14 west of Grant Road in Sooke, and at the start of the Malahat span of Highway 1 north of West Shore Parkway.

What are the repercussions for not having appropriate tires where they may be required? Police can turn you around in the event of adverse weather, issue a fine, or in the event of an accident, you may be issued an additional fine, face increased liability for a crash, and pay higher insurance claim costs, according to the provincial government.

Below are Vancouver Island highway sections where as of October 1st, snow-rated tires are a requirement:

- Highway 1 between West Shore Parkway and Bamberton
- Highway 4 between Parksville and the Tofino/Ucluelet junction
- Highway 14 between Sooke's Grant Road and Port Renfrew
- Highway 18 between Duncan and Lake Cowichan through to Port Renfrew via Pacific Marine Circle Route
- Highway 19 between Campbell River and Port Hardy
- Highway 28 between Campbell River and Gold River
