UBC Supermileage

UBC Supermileage The pursuit of efficiency starts here. We're an engineering team that builds ultra-efficient vehicles

UBC Supermileage was founded in 2001 by Mechanical Engineering students Rob Mahaffey and Brian Jung, with the vision of creating an environment for young engineers to test classroom theories against real-world engineering problems. In particular, UBC Supermileage strives to create vehicles with exceptional fuel efficiency, having set a world record in 2006 with 3,145 miles per gallon. Since then,

countless students have been involved with the team in multidisciplinary projects including mechanical design, aerodynamic simulation, composites fabrication, and electrical instrumentation. UBC Supermileage provides a means through which students are able to be creative, have fun, and gain valuable technical experience in engineering. Supermileage team members have had great success in securing co-op placements and full-time jobs after graduation. Co-op placements have included: Tesla, Laser Zentrum, Zaber Technologies, Nokia, Sierra Wireless, Avcorp, V-Tech, Canadian Space Agency (CSA), TRIUMF, Ford, Keen, Teleflex, Greenlight, Ballard Power Systems, and many more.

Project Spotlight - Engine Block Redesign!

This year, we are redesigning and manufacturing a fully custom engine block for our gasoline internal combustion vehicle. This project will **reduce** our overall weight, improve efficiency and increase quality of life. Owen Valmorbida and Andrew Schamber are working on this project, and we’re excited to see it fully integrated into our vehicle soon!

Meet Powertrain!

From gasoline optimization to hydrogen fuel cell innovation, our Powertrain division designs, builds, and refines the systems that keep our vehicles moving efficiently. Whether it’s ECU tuning, drivetrain development, or custom fuel cell work, this team blends hands on engineering with deep technical problem solving.

If you love getting your hands dirty, thinking across disciplines, and pushing efficiency to the limit, Powertrain might be the place for you.

Both our Fuel Cell Prototype and Battery Electric Urban cars hit the track again last month! From testing electrical and powertrain systems to fine-tuning hydrogen delivery and drivetrain gearing, the team worked hands-on to gather data, troubleshoot, and push each vehicle closer to peak efficiency.
A huge step forward for both vehicles and for our goal of the pursuit of efficiency!

Our Electrical Division powers every vehicle in UBC Supermileage. They’re the ones turning ideas into hardware, building the circuits and control systems that keep each car running smoothly on competition day.

From motor controllers and battery management to sensors, data logging, PCB design, and safety systems, ELEC is behind all the electronics that make our cars run. If it lights up, sends data, or moves because of electricity, this team made it happen. ⚡️

First track day of the season! 🏎️
Our fuel cell prototype hit the track as we tested the full system - from the electrical setup and powertrain integration to hydrogen delivery and drivetrain performance. Lots of learnings, troubleshooting, and fine-tuning as we identified how to make the car even more efficient for future runs. Excited to keep improving with every lap!

This year, UBC Supermileage is led by Valentino Jaber and Lucas Henderson, two dedicated student engineers driving innovation and connection across the team.
Valentino, a 5th-year Computer Engineering student, brings experience from developing a custom motor controller for the team, and software internships at Intel, Ansys, and Amazon.
Lucas, a 5th-year Engineering Physics student, has worked on all three vehicles, from steering to power distribution to tuning, with industry experience at TRIUMF and Dometic.
Both captains combine their experience and passion for the team to build success for all projects. They are here to guide Supermileage toward another strong competition season at Shell Eco-marathon 2025! 🏎️💨
