Being a mechanic is just a constant battle between ‘I got this’
and ‘who designed this piece of sh*t?

Anyone bringing their vehicle to my shop for brake repair's and I tell you your rotors are good for another year, but you do need new pads installed that's because I will not tell a customer they need rotors if those rotors are NOT damaged or worn beyond specifications. With the price of vehicle parts and repairs these days I do not tell any of my customers to replace parts that are not damaged or worn. All certified mechanics have a dial indicator and a micrometer to check the rotors for thickness and runout and if the rotors are not out of specs, I'm not asking the customer to replace them. BUT by all means if the customer wants those rotors replaced, I will gladly replace them with new rotors. So, if I tell you your rotors are ok but you do need brake pads replaced then that's all that will be replaced unless you tell me you want new rotors because I'm not in the habit of replacing rotors that are not worn or damaged.

This is why most all motor vehicle inspection stations go strictly by the book when doing an MVI on vehicles. In 2025, mechanics in Nova Scotia could potentially lose their licenses for conducting substandard motor vehicle inspections, as per the current regulations. The Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles could investigate and suspend or revoke licenses if inspections are not performed to the required standards, potentially after roadside checks. There have been instances where mechanics have lost their licenses for failing to properly inspect vehicles, with consequences such as a one-year license suspension.
Here's a more detailed look:
Consequences of Shoddy Inspections:
Mechanics who fail to conduct thorough and accurate inspections can face serious consequences, including license suspension or revocation.
Registry of Motor Vehicles Enforcement:
The Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles actively investigates and enforces standards, potentially through roadside checks.
Examples of License Suspensions:
There have been documented cases where mechanics have lost their licenses due to inadequate inspection practices, highlighting the serious nature of the issue.
Review of the MVI System:
The Nova Scotia government has acknowledged concerns about the current MVI system, including the potential for arbitrary decisions and unnecessary repairs.

Anyone who thinks DOT vehicle compliance officers does not stop your vehicle in a check point and jack your vehicle up and go under it and check it out, THINK AGAIN. This is a link of DOT checking for unsafe vehicles in the Truro area. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1022555886730147&set=a.408997724752636

Yesterday, the Truro Police Service partnered with the RCMP and Nova Scotia Vehicle Compliance to conduct a road safety initiative in Lower Truro, Colchester County between the hours of 0900 and 1500.

A total of 12 vehicles were directed to the on-site testing station with the following results:

7 vehicles were issued rejection stickers;
2 vehicles were towed as they were prohibited from operation;
2 vehicles were issued orders to reinspect;
1 vehicle was issued a warning.

In addition to the above, 27 Summary Offence Tickets were issued for various Motor Vehicle Act offences including seatbelt, cellphone, speeding (1 stunting), and driving motor vehicle while license revoked.
