Happy Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day! In Winnipeg, Local 681 members participated in the raising of the Unifor flag at Manitoba Hydro, where the local represents 255 front-line gas workers. Across the country, Unifor unites nearly 4,000 gas workers.

Unifor held a solidarity action at a secondary picket at a Saint-Gobain subsidiary in Mississauga, Ont. today to support striking Local 12 members at the company’s Plattsville plant. The members have been on strike since July 24, fighting for a fair deal.

Unifor’s Ontario Regional Director, Samia Hashi, and Indigenous Relations Director, Gina Smoke, recently traveled to Sudbury to meet with representatives from the organization, Water First.

There they also had a chance to meet with instructors and interns from the organization’s Environmental Water Program, a project supported in part by Unifor’s Social Justice Fund.

This program is aimed at providing education and hands-on skills training, via paid internships, for Indigenous members from nearby communities in the management and safeguarding of water and fish resources.

A total of 11 Indigenous community members began their 15-month internship program last July – providing them with the necessary tools and knowledge to secure good jobs in environmental monitoring and protection, to help support and promote more healthy and resilient local communities.

"When we fight for Women's Advocates, we're making sure there is someone in the workplace who understands, who will listen and who knows how to help," Samia Hashi, Unifor Ontario Regional Director has fought hard for survivors of intimate partner violence.
