Trick-or-treating is a Halloween tradition where children and adults dress up in costumes and go from house to house asking for treats while saying "trick or treat". The phrase is a suggestion that if the homeowner gives a treat, then the children will not play a trick on them. If the homeowner doesn't give a treat, the children may play a trick on them.

The tradition of trick-or-treating may have originated from the ancient practices of "guising" and "souling". In the 19th century, people would sometimes perform "tricks" on their neighbors, such as rattling windows or tying doors shut. To protect their homes, some people would offer candy to the pranksters. The phrase "trick or treat" may have originated from these pranks. The earliest known use of the phrase in connection with Halloween was in a 1927 Alberta newspaper article.
